Recon Op In Leicester

Hi, Just wondered if anyone else on here has had their op at Leicester Royal Infirmary?

I am due to be admitted on May 11th and will be operated on by Matt Smith Plastic Surgeon.

Feeling very nervous as he has told me i don’t have enough excess flesh on any one single part of me so it’s going to be a bit of a jigsaw puzzle.

Have loads of questions to ask, so if there is anyone out there please get in touch

i am due for reconstruction in leicester too, not yet got a date, have you had a pre admission? You need to ask them exactly where they will be taking tissue from, the morning of the surgery they mark out the areas to use so check with Matt Smith then.
Also speech to the breast care team at the glenfield they are excellent

Hi Angel. Yes had pre op assessment last week. Only saw registrar and he told me to speak to Mr Smith on Monday when i go in for op.

Are you having Ld or Diep? How long is it since your mx? Are yoy having Mr Smith also?

Sorry for all the questions, just good to talk to someone who will shortly be where i am now.Hope we can stay in touch and i can let you know how op went.

Hi, I’m also due to have tram or diep reconstruction with Mr Varmar at the Leicester Royal Infirmary after a mastectomy in December 2007. No date yet but have been told it will no later than the end of June. How much notice were you given for your operation? I have the opportunity to start a new job in August, so the sooner I have the reconstruction the better. I’m really looking forward to a new boob, as although my scar has healed well I dislike the flat chest. It’s amazing what the plastic surgeons can offer us. I’m sure they will find enough skin on you.I was told not to loose any weight as there is just enough fat for the reconstruction. Since the last consultation I have gained nearly 1 stone so there is plenty of fat there now! Wishing you well for your operation.Keep in touch.

Hi Chamomile, Good to hear from you.

I have had lots of appointments sent to me since i first saw Mr Smith in Jan 08. When i have had to cancel they have been great and asked me when i wanted to go in and i have always received a letter a couple of weeks before op. So i’d imaging they will get you in very soon. Have you rang his secretary and told her of your new job? I would as they are so good at working round you. They make you feel so special.

I am nervous about Monday, suppose it’s natural. I have spoken to a couple of people who have had their ops and they sing the praises of all the plastic surgeons at Leicester.

Would you mind me asking how old you are? I am 53. Whereabouts in Leicester do you live? I live in Wigston.

Hi Mounties, Yes I will contact them, I spoke to her recently to say that I would take date at short notice if there was a cancellation. I am 45yrs old and live very near to you in Thorpe Astley near Fosse Park.
Will be thinking of you on Monday and wish you a speedy recovery. keep in touch.

Hi, I live in Northampton and have been given the choice to have my recon done at Leicester. They perform the DIEP recon which seems to be the best option for me!!?@ The only thing that scares me is the duration of this op, recovery time and the extra long scar! Can anyone offer any advice about this? I am so scared at the moment and I am swinging from this op to not having anything done. Is it worth it and do you feel more confident after? Has anyone spoken to women that have gone through with this procedure?

I hope all your op’s go well.

Hi Haran, I have spoken to a lady who had the Diep op at Leicester last July. She is 63. She spoke so highly of the difference it has made to her life and sang the praises of all the consultants there.
She told me that a year on the scar across her tummy is barely noticeable and she will be on her hols rhis week wearing a bikini for the first time in 3 yrs since her mx.

I do understand what you are concerned about re the length of the op, but can i suggest you ring bcc and ask for peer support? I did this before i made my final decision and it helped me decide to go ahead.

Originally i was told a Ld op took 8 hours, which seemed a ridiculous amount of time. I now know that the ops only take 4 to 5 hours but they keep you in the recovery area for 3 hours to make sure you are ok after major surgery. Then you are back to the ward.

I’m having mine on Monday and i’m both excited and terrified. My one and only op was my mx. I will be back on here to let you know how it went and hopefully give you that reassurance

Hi Haran

If you are interested in the BCC Peer support service which mounties mentions you can find details at the following link:-

breastcancercare.org.uk/upload/pdf/Peer_support.pdf

This service aims to put you in touch with someone who has experienced this type of reconstrcution. You will be able to talk on the telephone and share your concerns and ask any questions you may have.

I hope you find this helpful.

Kind regards
Jill (BCC Facilitator)

Hello Ladies

I am waiting for my recon at Leicester Royal Infirmary (hopefully July/August) with Mr. Varma. Had a reduction in December last year at Leicester - all went very well and I am extremely pleased with my reduced boob - just need another one to match!

Any advice on reconstruction anyone??

Lynda

hi ladies, my sister has an appointment this tue with mr varma, she is also waiting for a reconstruction ,although she is unsure what type of reconstruction they will do. Her breast surgeon has said that her options will be limited because she smokes, Has anybody else had this problem? She is trying to stop !

Hi

I was diaganosed with high grade DCIS in April and had my maestectomy and immediate reconstruction done at Glenfield. I was a smoker but with the help of medication was able to give up before the operation. Apparently the blood supply to the new constructed breast is hindered if you are a smoker and affects how well the new breast heals etc. As it turned out my DCIS turned out to be invasive cancer with lymph node involvement and the radiotheraphy has made the reconstruction hard… and I can’t have anymore surgery until after my Herceptin finishes and alas I am once more a smoker.

I have an appointment with Mr Offer on Monday and cant wait for surgery the sooner the better. How long are people waiting between appointments and op dates?

i,ve waited 15 weeks for recon op from docs app delayed by another week was on the 4 june now the 12, lookin forward to it 1 op down 1 op to go
Lornaxxx

The waiting is the worst bit, hope all goes well when you have your op, good luck
