Reconstruction size

I’ve just been diagnosed with DCIS, and will be having a mastectomy soon. I can’t decide if I should have reconstruction or not. I had a lumpectomy 15 years ago, so my boob is much smaller. Would a reconstruction be to this smaller size or similar to the good one?

Hi there,

I’m pretty sure you can choose. I had a reconstruction 3 weeks ago. I’d had past lumpectomies and cavity shaves. I chose to have my DD breast reduced to D and they reduced the healthy breast to match.

The reconstruction is done by a plastic surgeon. You chose implants or own tissue and should be asked about size. They will be keen to get a symmetrical match, so often lift the healthy side as the reconstruction is always perkier.

All the best x

Thanks Bluesatsuma.
Nothing has been mentioned about the other one. I’m only being offered an implant, as that’s the only option at my hospital.
I’ll go back and ask some more questions.
Thanks

Hello caroline_w_uk

Thanks for posting.

It’s not clear if your most recent diagnosis of DCIS is in the same breast that you had a lumpectomy for 15 years ago or on the opposite side.

As @bluesatsuma says surgeons wherever possible will try to achieve breast symmetry. This may be through using a breast implant or your own tissue after mastectomy to match the opposite breast or reduce a healthy breast to match the treated side. It looks like you are going back to ask more questions which is a good idea. Our information about reconstruction might help with this.

We have an upcoming Speakers Live about breast reconstruction with consultant oncoplastic surgeon
