Hi
I had a mastectomy with diep reconstruction in Oct 22. At the time I was keen on getting the tattoo as my nipple had been removed. I got a call today informing me they can do it next month, I know have cold feet about it and many questions.
Will the ink be safe?
I have lymphoedema in my reconstructed breast, will the tattoo cause any further issues.
I am worried about the dye that is used, can this be an endocrine disruptor.
Has anyone had the tattoo that can give me some insight into their experience.
Thank you
Hi Sab53
Thanks for posting here in the Ask Our Nurses area of the forum.
It’s not clear from your post whether you are having a nipple and areola tattoo or a decorative tattoo, however it’s understandable that you have questions and concerns.
Tattoo inks used for nipple and areola tattooing in NHS hospital settings are regulated for safe use. You don’t say where you’d be having this done or who would be performing the tattooing, but as you have lymphoedema in your reconstructed breast, it’s important to speak to your treatment team before having it done. They’ll be able to advise you on the risks based on your individual situation. They can also answer any other concerns you have about the ink used.
The links above provide some useful information about working with a tattoo artist outside your hospital setting. You may also find the Mastectomy Tattooing Alliance a helpful contact and source of information on any type of tattooing after mastectomy. They also produce a written guide you can request on areola tattooing.
You might wish to connect with others to ask about their experience of having a tattoo by posting in another area of this forum or via our Someone Like Me service. The service can match you with a trained volunteer who’s had a similar experience to you. You can be in touch with your volunteer by phone or email and they can share their personal experiences to answer your questions, offer support or simply listen to how you are feeling.
You can ring the Someone Like Me team on 0114 263 6490 or email them at someone.likeme@breastcancernow.org, so they can then match you to your volunteer.
