Recurrence - under lumpectomy scar - same stats as before

Evening everyone,

I haven’t posted on this site before - but I was a lurker a few years back.
I was first diagnosed just after my 35th birthday with grade 2, IDC, 1cm, ER/PR score 8. Her2 Neg. Stage 1.
I felt a lump June this year and of course needed to get it checked out. Biopsy confirmed exacts stats as before but 6mm on ultrasound.
I’m due a bilateral MX (my choice) with immediate skin sparing DIEP reconstruction on 17th August.
I’m also awaiting staging scans and insure of what futher treatment to expect.

Would love to be in touch with someone who has had been unfortunate to be in the same boat x

Hi Shonny

Sorry to hear you’re facing this again.

I was diagnosed at 32, nearly 7 years ago (similar to you: grade 2, 7mm, HER2-neg, stage 1, 7/8 hormone scores). Last year, 5.5yrs on, I was diagnosed with a recurrence. Unfortunately it had spread to my lymph nodes. I had a mx but there was no sign of cancer in the breast :frowning:

It really sucks second time round. But I will say, a year on, it’s amazing how life continues and it’s possible to gradually put it behind you.

I really hope you’ve caught this lump in time and it hasn’t gone any further. I guess you’ll know more about a treatment plan once you’ve had the surgery? It’s brave to have double-mx, and very sensible.

Did you have chemotherapy or radiation or tamoxifen first time round? I declined all treatment (other than surgery) because I was so desperate to have children, but this time I had everything on offer. Tough, but manageable.

xxxx Jane

Hi Shonny,

Sorry you are here but welcome anyway! I have a similar experience to you, diagnosed 09, WLE, rads and tamoxifen but no chemo. Found lump march 11, and have had mastectomy with immediate tram recon June 11, due to start chemo hopefully Friday if wound fully healed by then (got a staph infection) also need further surgery for ANC clearance as 1 node positive, lift on good side and oopherectomy if chemo doesn’t tip me into menopause as only 41. My recurrence was about 1cm outside rads area, plus another one at top of breast.

Horrible place to be but its surprising how much life just goes on, I even have whole days when I dont think about cancer at all - and to be honest just a few weeks ago I would not have thought that possible!

Keep your chin up - you will get lots of support here! Pm me if you want to know anything about the diep recon or just need someone to talk to.

Thank you for your responses.

My mammo and ultrasound end of January were both clear. But I felt a small lump same place as before about 5 weeks ago. This tumour has grown back in the same place clear margins on path, despite having extra radio.

I was offered another lumpectomy or mx (TRAM) on that side only. However, after researching immediate reconstruction options, I decided I wanted them both removed and the DIEP. I see some others on here have had that done where I am due to have my op, Wythenshaw, Manchester.

I don’t have any nodes left to remove on that side, but I am told they will probably do staging scans.

I didn’t do chemo the first time around. I had researched it a lot and being highly hormone positive, stuck with Zoladex and Tam. I was a single parent and had to carry on working to keep it all together!

It’s great to hear you both are doing well. I am really positive person by nature but it’s still been a hell of a shock. xx

Hi Shonny
My diagnosis is exactly the same as yours, grade 2, 10 mm, no nodes etc and i am scared stiff of a recurrence. I was diagnosed in jan this year and am due my last chemo in 2 weeks time followed by 23 radiotherapy sessions. Can i ask when was your original diagnosis was ? did anyone explain why they thought you had a reurrence in the same place ?
I hope you don’t mind me asking but you don’t tend to hear alot about grade 2 recurrences.
All the very best - Melxx

Hi Beardie (Lovely pup btw!)
My original diagnosis was Feb 2009, IDC 1cm, (Lumpectomy followed by ANC due to isolated tumour cells in first sentinel node - all nodes clear), grade 2, clear margins, ER/PR score 8 on both. Her2 neg.
I was given a very low percentage chance of recurrence.
My stats are the same this time, but 6mm tumour. I am unsure of Her2status as yet (three weeks and waiting) but I would put money on it being neg.

I did see a surgeon and he told me he thought it was possibly down to one of three things. 1) the disease was more aggressive than thought - he thought this unlikely. 2) there was possible another cancer at the time of surgery unnoticed - again unlikely due to clear mammos and ultrasounds; or what he considered the reason why was 3)incomplete incision failure.

It is very rare and my orignal surgeon said it was a ‘complete suprise’. Well not a very nice one ;).

xx

Thank you Shonny - its all so scary.
I do hope everything goes really well for you and thank goodness it is such a tiny tumor.
Take care
Melxx
