Referral to the breast clinic

Hi All,

I’m new to this and feel like I’ve spent an eternity trawling the internet reading things about breast cancer when really it’s only been a few weeks.

I found a lump in my breast around 5 months ago, I don’t know what made me check them that day but I found the lump and then ignored it up until recently when it started to ache. I went to see my GP, who asked the usual questions and then suggested anti biotics and that I take my nipple piercing out and go back in 2 weeks. Today I went back, my GP felt my breasts again and said she was referring me to the breast clinic as there has been no change.

Unfortunately my family aren’t very supportive at all and although I’ve told my sister, she’s actually ignored my message. I’m absolutely terrified about what’s going to happen, the tests that will be carried out and whether this is going to be cancer. The lump is small and hard, just above my nipple in area of the breast and the whole side of my left breast feels different in comparison to my right. It’s also now started to get bigger. The waiting is absolute agony!!! Does anybody have any advice about the waiting and the appointment? I’m a 24 year old single parent.

hi L,
As LadyB says.
Of all the things it can be, bc is the LEAST likely, so try not to let your mind go into overdrive on this & by acting on it, you’ve done all you need to for now.
As is generally said here, do avoid google, it is not helpful & can be needlessly scary. If you need further information, come back on here or use this site.
Let us know how you get on.

Hi LadyB & Ann.

Sorry for the amount of time between your replies and mine.

Unfortunately in between my last post and now, my symptoms have got worse and I’m not sure if all is related or not. My chest area and armpit on the same side as the lump have become quite swollen, I have a small lump in my armpit now and it feels so itchy! My shoulder is painful at times and my arm occasionally too.

My GP tried to get me in urgently when I went back to her but the specialist is on study leave so appointment isn’t until 23rd :frowning: I’m absolutely terrified! It’s not too long really but I feel like it’s a lifetime away until I have answers to what this is!

I’ll keep you updated of course.

Thanks for your support!

Hi L

like the other ladies, I would endorse that this could be due to anything, not neccessarily cancer. When I read about your nipple piercing, My immediate thought was…could it be a cyst? or an infection.?

You  dont need all this worry and waiting, usually we are seen within two weeks. Do feel you can go back to see your GP if you need to chat. You could also call the helpline above…they are very good, or you could call the hospital yourself and chat to a Breast Care Nurse, she will know exactly what you are going through and should be able to help xx

do keep us up to date on your progress, we are all here for you xx

hugs,

Moijan???

Hi Littlemisschat
Really hope you are ok. Like you I found a lump in Oct, but doc said it was a cyst. It was still there in Dec so I got referred to the Brest unit, where they dine the usual testing. I’m waiting to get results on Thurs.
Like you I am a googler, but it didn’t do me any good. It made me so anxious. This site is great, anytime I feel the urge to Google I just go on hear and the positivity is brilliant.
You are doing the right thing getting it checked and believe me the waiting is definitely the hardest bit. My life seems to be on hold until Thursday!
Take care xx

Joe, good luck for tomorrow…one stop clinic sounds goodxx

Moijanx???

L…sorry about the extra swelling…one thing that its good to avoid when you get this is very/too hot baths, as the swelling might get a bit worse. Anyway, hope you get seen asap.

Moijan xxx???

Hi everyone,

Thankyou so much for your support and advice. Sorry for the late reply, I’ve been trying to keep busy and have friends over etc to keep my mind off things.

I am still unfortunately very nervous for Monday and what next week will bring but at the same time looking forward to answers. One of the ducts on the breast affected started to leak milk today after I felt some very strong pain through it, it’s happened sporadically through the day and I’m hoping it’s just because I’m due my period next week.

I did call the breast clinic (in tears unfortunately) after this happened and the lady said that without seeing me, they can’t make any indication as to what it could be but she’s sure it’s nothing to worry about… not helpful really! It’s more painful today than it has been at all and the prescription I’ve been given to help with the pain and swelling seems to make not a jot of difference!

Will keep you posted, hoping for a better day tomorrow! Love and hugs to you all

Hi Moijan
Thank you for your kind words. Yes I am keeping busy and that helps, in the day I’m not too bad. It’s at night my mind keeps ticking over and making me worry.
I am very nervous about tomorrow but keep telling myself, what will be, will be!
Miss L, the waiting is the hardest bit but at least you are going on Monday so you are on the right track. Hope you’re ok
