Relief then more questions

Several weeks ago, I noticed a slight bloody discharge from one breast. I saw a breast specialist. An ultrasound revealed a 2mm nodule in a duct. It was biopsied. It was benign. The dr said that it was not papilloma. He wants to see me in a couple of weeks to see if I still have a discharge. He mentioned that if I do, he would look for something else in the duct that would explain the discharge. Naturally I have questions hours after the call from the dr. If I do have discharge at the next visit, what could he be looking for?

Hi @bluejay2

It is totally understandable you have questions when waiting. I’m sure the doctor is just double checking everything by having you back.

If you want to talk to someone please contact the wonderful BCN nurses here

  • Helpline: 0808 800 6000 (Mon-Fri 9am-4pm; Sat 9am-1pm). Speak to our trained helpline team. No questions are too big or too small.
  • Ask Our Nurses: You can message our nurses here on the forum, or confidentially. Whatever you prefer

They have more time to talk than the breast care nurses in clinics, although you probably haven’t been given their contact number as you haven’t been diagnosed.

I’ll keep my fingers crossed that it is nothing to worry about and the discharge will have stopped by the time you go back to see the doctor. Please keep us updated as it will be helpful to others.

Hello bluejay2

Thanks for posting.

It’s understandable to have questions following your call with the consultant.

They may want to wait to see if they discharge disappears of its own accord or they may want to repeat a biopsy. You don’t mention what type of biopsy you had but sometimes another type may be necessary. They may consider repeating the ultrasound or may suggest a different type of scan.

Here is information about the different types of benign breast conditions.

Hopefully you feel reassured that you are being thoroughly assessed. You could also call the breast clinic to talk things through again. As @naughty_boob says you can call our helpline if you would like to talk this through or have any further questions. The helpline team have time to listen, talk things through and signpost you to more support and information if necessary. Your call will be confidential, and the number is free from UK landlines and all mobile networks. The number is 0808 800 6000. If you have hearing or speech difficulties prefix our number with 18001 and the call will go through Relay UK. Our helpline has access to telephone interpreters if language translation is required.

If you would prefer one of our nurses to call you. To do this, please complete this form ticking the box agreeing to a call back .

Our usual opening hours are Monday to Friday 9am - 4pm and 9am -1pm on Saturday.

Out of hours you can leave a message and we will call you back when we next open.

Best wishes

Jane
