removal of ovaries

removal of ovaries

removal of ovaries I had a mastecomy and immediate reconstruction for a high grade DCIS in July. No other treatment had been suggested. I also have a cyst on my ovary which the gynecologist was going to remove but he is now suggesting that I have my ovaries removed to try to stop my BC reacurring. My periods stopped about 9 months ago but I don’t seem to have had any symptoms of the menopause. Has anybody else had their ovaries removed to try to stop breast cancer reacurrance and what symptoms of the menopause that you didn’t have before do you have now?
I am finding this far harder to decide on than my mastecomy, which I had to have, and my reconstruction, which I knew if I could still have the shape of a breast I would have to go for. This desicion seems to be all about what may or may not happen and I’m concerned that once it is done there is no going back.
I was just beginning to feel I was getting back to ‘normal’, back to work etc. when this comes along and I’m back to not sleeping very well and feeling very fragile emotionally so I would be grateful for any feed back.

Ovaries… Hi Bev

I had my ovaries removed in August. I had bc the year before and as soon as I knew that I was oestrogen positive it seemed like a good way to go, the operation is really very easy. I was admitted as a day case and was back home by 8.30pm, I only have 3 little cuts one in my belly button and the other two lower down. I was back at work the week after.

I am on Arimadex and havent had a period since April 2005. My symptoms have been hot flushes & dryness down below. Since the operation they have got a little worse, but…3 months pre op ‘touch wood’ the flushes have started to ease off so all in all it hasnt been too bad and I would have had to go through it at some point.

I feel the ovaries are better out than in, and for me it was a good decision.

Good luck with yours.

Removal of ovaries I had two WLEs for high grade DCIS about 18 months ago and am taking Tamoxifen. I was pre menopause although my periods had been very erratic. About 8 weeks ago I had a hysterectomy and my ovaries removed. The hysterectomy was done because I had a huge fibroid which was beginning to cause problems. The gynaecologist said that with my history he recommended removing the ovaries too. I have had very few problems since the operation - a few night sweats and the odd hot flush but I’m not sure they are much worse than what I was experiencing before… I took the view that I would be going through the menopause soon and so being plunged into it by surgery was probably a way of getting it over and done with. So far symptons have not been too bad.

I had my ovaries removed by keyhole in May. It was very easy, very little pain and was driving a couple of weeks later. As far as menopausal symptoms go I wasn’t having many before and I haven’t noticed an increase. The only thing I’mconcerned about is weight gain which I’m having to be careful about than before

Good luck
