reoccurence after a DIEP flap??

Hi
I had aDIEP flap Sept 07 and i am thrilled with the results.

I have recently noticed an unusual shaped lump on the underside of the breast on the scar, also another lump adjacent to the armpit.
I have to say i am totally shocked.Saw my plastic surgeon who said he wasn’t sure what it was.I was sent for an ultra sound and fine needle biopsy.Dr doing scan said it didn’t look nasty, more like fat necrosis.
I am petrified waiting for the results on Tuesday as to what it may be.
Anyone had anything similar happen?Had breast cancer 1992.

Hi,
I had diep flap in dec 13th 07, i also had a small lump in same breast a few wks ago and reported it to the surgeon, i had an ultra sound and they said it was a small cyst and no further action required, but at the time thought it was a small fat necrosis, breast surgeon said these things were very common givin the complexity of the operation she also said it could be a left in stich, the small lump is still there and i tend to worry still, but got to take what the docs say
and relax a little, easier said than done i,m afraid. My breast still feels quite lumpy they say it can take a while to settle. Hope u get good news i,m sure u will.
Take care

Hi Renee

Thanks very much for taking the time to reply. It’s has eased my mind a little that you have experienced something similar.
It’s the waiting to know which is unbearable, and the bank holiday weekend (which i normally love) is just an extra day to wait.Having had breast cancer such along time ago,the horrible feeling of waiting for results has come back to haunt me!!
Oh well nothing i can do for now.I will contact you again when i hear something.
Bye for now
Karen.

Hi Karen,

I had a lump in my DIEP reconstruction - after an ultasound, FNA and core biopsy it turned out to be fat necrosis which is very common as Renee said. The worst part is the waiting for results and the niggling at the back of you head - is it back?

Try not to worry - easier said that done, I know!

Thinking of you,

Hi Karen

I had DIEP in Nov 07, I now have a very sore and painful lump at the top of my new boob, I thought I had damaged something after having to run to catch a plane a few weeks ago, its very sore to the touch and getting me down now, I am booked for USS but just wondering if anyone else lumps/bumps are painful, I wasnt worried until I mentioned it to Doctor but now that I am having a scan I am!!!

I am petrified of secondaries and also fed up with feeling such a doom and gloom merchant every time I get something wrong with me.

Please any answers

Clare (S)

Hi Sally

Thankyou for your kind words,it’s a little more reasurring when “fat necrosis” keeps being mentioned.

I don’t feel too worried about the lump on the scar,it’s the one nearer the armpit which is bringing back a few memories!!

I have tried to keep it from my husband and 20yr old twin daughters, after all such a long time has elapsed since my original diagnosis. You just want to protect them.

Trying to do things to keep me busy, amazing under stressful situations like this that the back log of ironing gets done!!!

I will keep positve as usual.

Karen.

Hi Clare

The lump which i am having the problem with hasn’t really caused me any discomfort(may of noticed it earlier if it had!!)

Sounds very much as though yours’ may be due to injury(as your op was only nov 07)

Yes, it really scared me half to death when PS mentioned an USS,thought i was just going to be told "nothing to worry about"Still looking on the positive side as i don’t really know why fat from tummy(not breast tissue) should suddenly produce a secondary?

I understand fully about being a “doom and gloom merchant”(it also made me laugh!!)

Will hopefully post some good news tomorrow!!

Take Care

Karen.

Hi Karen,
Hope u r feeling a bit better about going to the docs tomorrow for your results i will be thinking of you, i,m going for more chemo tomorrow, i will be glad when it is over. It doesn,t matter what happens from now on i think we all get
paranoid worrying about everything, and i think you have to be going through it to really understand how mentally draining it can be.
Although i got dx with bc nearly 17yrs ago i never stopped thinking about it on a daily basis, at the beginning i only needed to get a pain somewhere and i automatically thought it was back i,m sure i used to send my family and friends nuts. That,s the good thing about on here everyone knows exactly how u feel because they r all going through the same thing one way or the other.
Hear how u get on i will keep my fingers crossed.
Love
Reneexx.

Sorry karen just incase you r wondering when i had it first time round i had lumpectomy, chemo and rads, then exactly 16yrs later i had a recurrence although they r treating it as a new one.
I was 30yrs old at the time and my kids were 8 and 6, so i got 16yrs of pretty good health and although i was totally devastated at it coming back i still think i did pretty good as i was triple neg and stage 3
and they said the tumour was quite aggressive so just goes to show everyone is different and no two people will be totally alike.

Hi everyone.

Due to my relief at being told that the lump on the scar is fat necrosis,i had a large glass of wine and the rest is history!
That is why i forgot to post a message!!
The lump adjacent to the armpit was found after i came back from my USS,so i mentioned this to the breast care nurse after she told me the good news, she thought it was also most probably fat necrosis. As the whole of the diep flap was scanned she was going to speak with the dr. who did the scan and see what he thought.
But i feel ok about it.
Hope the rest of your chemo goes ok Renee.
You were very young when first diagnosed,i was a bit older at 35yrs.I had a 9yr old and 4yr old twins.
Has the cancer come back in the other breast this time? and did you go on to have a mastectomy 16yrs ago(you only mentioned a lumpectomy)
I wish you well,i am sure you will sail through this blip, and come out the other side.
I will keep you in my thoughts.
Bye for now
Love karen xx

Hi Karen,

So pleased you have the pleasantly named fat necrosis too! I know how wonderful that relief feels!

Love,

Sallyxx

Hi Karen,
That is great news you must feel a great relief, brill.
When i was first dx 16yrs ago i had lumpectomy, chemo, rads. Then last yr in nov had second dx in same breast in scar tissue, same type of cancer triple neg but with very low pos on tips they said this was unusual, but said as so long in between and no visible secondries they would treat it as new lump.
but that is me over the back, went on to have immediate recon in dec13th 07, then chemo but no rads as theyt don,t do you twice on the same site. I totally understand the gloom and doom part of it because we r all scared of the secondries it really worries u sick as time goes on though it does get easier but as we know to our cost it can come back anytime it likes.
Hope all goes well with you all.
Love Reneexx.
