Results after WLE

Had my results today. 5cm area but contained 2 areas DCIS within it rather than one whole area of 5cm. No invasion and all margins resected satisfactorily. Very good news. So, It’s back to work and await my oncology appt with radiotherapist end of the month to see about the radiotherapy stuff. OPD with breast surgeon 6 months… sorted.

Hello V, I’m awating results after a WLE, axillary clearance and mammoplasty to normal breast! Whilst this rollercoster is one we’d all prefer not to be on, your post does sound very positive in that all margins were clear for you. Were you relieved? I am dreading further surgery if my margins aren’t clear having already been through the mill in Theatre once. It’s also great news there’s no invasion for you. I hope that the rest of your treatment goes well and you can resume “normal” service whatever that means after a BC diagnosis and treatment. All the very best, and big hugs as you take the next steps in treatment, Kerry.

Hi Kerry. oooo that wa s along time ago I posted… some posts just get lost in the ether I’ve found. Ok for me but for new people spilling their worst fears it must seem like they’ve hit a brick wall if nobody ‘replies’. I try and do a bump up if I see a post with nobody having replied.
Even if I’d had to have repeat surgery I’d worked myself up to that possibility and having read a lot surrounding this I think it would have been for the best. If they had to take a third bite I’d have been less happy. I just had to decide that the ‘team’ deals with this on a daily basis and follow research based directives so they (probably) knew better than me (who had not had first hand experience) what would be best for my situation. It doesn’t, obviously cover my psychological state, but I think the breast care nurse would have helped act as my advocate in that case to get a mutually agreed path of treatment.
I can understand your trepidation surrounding further surgery as you’ve already had quite a bashing (compared to me). I know they do visual checks with DCIS under Xray of the excised area and then just go back in then and there - whilst you are still in the theatre. Obviously the final histology can make a difference as things can be seen under microscopy that wouldn’t be seen under Xray. It would depend on the type of BC I guess too.
I’m back at work and just doing things I did before. The wound has healed and the bruises almost disappeared… just a few tingly twinges now and then.
The waiting is horrid for results. Let us know how you get on and thinking of you
