Hi All
I received the results of my surgery yesterday and was told that the lump (2.2cm) was made up of 4mm ductal (grade 3) and the rest was invasive lobular (grade 2). I am concerned that lobular is ore likely to effect other breast but I was only given a mammogram for this and I have read that lobular doesn’t show up on these?
Anyone else in the same situation?
Hi,
I too had one lump (5cm +) but lobular and ductal er+pr+ and her2+, both where invasive, with vascular invasion and spread into the skin.
I have only had mammograms done on the other breast( they do digital ones here) and so far no probs, I had chemo,mx,rads and herceptin and tamoxifen and recently an oopherectomy.
I asked my surgeon about the risk of it coming back in the other breast and he was not overly concerned he said that with the treatment I have had I have reduced my risk.
I am now 20 mths on from dx and although I recently had to have bone and ct scans as I was unwell all is looking good.
I feel confident in my specialists and treatment, occasionally I get moments of panic but these are getting less.
Speak to your surgeon/specialist if you are worried it helped me greatly.
Hi, same situation here with multifocal ILC & ductal mixed, ILC grade 2 and grade 3 ductal, >7cm. Had mx, anc & chemo. Follow up will be 3 monthly and they are considering MRI’s for this as mine didn’t show up on the mammo. The bilateral risk depends on which study you read, between 10-29% percent. I am hopeful that if it does appear in the other side it will be spotted early enough! It’s not uncommon to have a mix of lobular & ductal.
thanks both - spoke to my bcn this morning and she said i should stop looking things up on the net. Her reply was that the team have looked at the mammogram and as far as they can tell all is normal. Is a digital mri able to pick up lobular by the way? I am having my treatment at King’s in London so I presume that they will have quite up to date technology. Glad all is going well for you both.

I had grade 2 ILC, with a small amount of IDC. Because of the lobular, I was also given an MRI scan, which did find another small area of suspicion but which was actually ok. I believe the MRI scan picks up many things, even innocent ones, but it gives a clearer indication of the extent of lobular bc.

Hi ladies,
Another one here, both ductal and lobular. After 3 surgeries to get clear margin they found the ILC so I was straight away sent for MRI to check other side. Finally had mastectomy and because of small chance of recurrence on other side I am having prophylactic mx. I had to ask for it but had no trouble getting surgeon to agree. Just waiting for appt to see consultant to talk about recon at same time.
Hi Ann, long time no talk!!!
Love to you all,
Jane x
this does confirm my worry that i should be checked again using mri. i meet with oencologist wednesday so will put together a list of my concerns. which hospital are you at Jane/Ann ?
Hi I have Both ductual and lobular my mammogram came back clear over a year ago and was told I had ductual pappoilloma (sorry about spelling still in chemo fog)My symptom was a bleeding nipple. After op to remove ducts cancer found then I was send for MRI as mammograms hadnt picked anything up! Thats when lobular found 8cms surgeon said mams wouldnt have picked lobular up also slight concern on other side still to be investigated! Mris recommended for future check ups!
Hi Kallycat,
I’m under Crawley and East Surrey Hospitals in Sussex/Surrey. If I remember rightly Ann is in Hampshire but I am sure she will be along to tell you.
I had a total of 11cms ductal/lobular but luckily no nodes affected out of 11 removed over all my ops. I have never been so glad to have big boobs as it hopefully was all contained there but will be really glad to have the other one removed too.
I was given chemo and rads and thankfully all that is done now and I am slightly over a year past dx.
It was on a very similar thread that Ana and I first met, must be a year ago now!!
I have just had my first mammo sine dx and there was no suggestion then about an MRI but they maybe due to the fact that I am going to have surgery to remove it so probably there is no point.
Hope this all helps,
Love Jane x
Dear All
Emailed my surgeon with my concerns - this is his reply
Lobular breast cancer can be bilateral, however this still remains unusual despite, what ends up being in the literature.
The exact incidence of bilateral disease at presentation is more difficult to ascertain as published studies look at bilateral disease overtime. It is clear that hormonal therapy has therapeutic effect for the cancer we know about and prophylaxis against postulated second primaries.
Hope you don’t mind me asking what symptons you had before you was dx ?
I had a mammogram in may because of pain and a indented nipple and told it was clear just fatty tissue and i am grateful for that but i wasn’t offered a scan i am 45, i went back to my gp and she couldn’t believe they couldn’t see my nipple went in esp when i raised my arm, she did say i could go back to see her anytime and she would send me back to the hospital, i’m really scared to do this and feel a nuisance but my dent is going in more and it’s only 2 mths, the pain as gone apart from a funny feeling in that breast also it’s itchy sometimes.
I feel i can’t talk to anyone at home about it and i’m grateful for any advice. Kim
Most clinics offer the triple assessment now and if you are still concerned I would ask to be referred back to have further tests to confirm the initial result. You need to have the reassurance that all is ok!
I agree with Tina - go back and ask for further tests. It will put your mind at ease.
Thankyou both for your replys it means alot ,i feel stupid in away but i keep thinking what if my gut feelings right ive got to live with the fact i could have done something, then i’m thinking you could be wasting there time, omg my head is spinning with it all and i feel bad asking the questions to you wonderful ladies who have been so supporting and you’ve all got enough with your own treatments etc i am so sorry if i’m being a pain. Kim
