Hi all, I had 17 biopsies taken & today was the MTD to diacuss my case. The Breast Care Centre have just rang to say the Consultant is calling me on Monday. Would a Cancer diagnosis be given over the phone? My mind is on overdrive!
Thanks x

Hi they rang me and asked me to come in when I got my diagnosis and I think that’s normal(best ) practice but I have had news over the phone too which isn’t nice at all . Horrible that you have to wait all weekend for that phone call . Fingers crossed for the best news for you - horrible time - we all understand it’s awful
Thank you for your reply. I hope you are ok. My initial thought it that they wouldn’t give you a diagnosis over the phone but I’m new to all this & wondering if it is possible.
It’s more likely they want to talk through other results non cancer related or re further tests but it’s not impossible to get bad news over the phone either . I’d have some support around you for the call just in case - wish I could give you total re-assurance but I can’t - try and keep yourself busy this weekend - hopefully by Monday evening you will have a great weight lifted off you
Thank you. I appreciate your reply. I initially went in re a small hard lump that they think is a fatty necrosis but they found lots of microcalcifications so that’s where the 17 biopsies were taken from.
I hope whatever stage you are at you are coping ok.
Hi @pollyw yes, i got my cancer diagnosis over the phone so I think is normal but don’t get yourself worked up as at the moment you don’t know for sure. Xxx
Hi. I finally got the call & they are saying that despite the scans all shows microcalcifications they couldn’t see calcifications in my bopsies & therefore I need to have the biopsies again; I can’t believe it.
You would have thought after so many biopsies they would have managed to hit one of them ! Hopefully that is good news although having to go through it all again
isn’t !
The consultant said that the biopsies musn’t have reached the targetted microcalcifications. The whole process has been a long time. I just wanted a definitive answer but will have lots of waiting again it seems.
So sorry you have to go through it again and that you didn’t get your answers . Hope you x
Sorry pressed send too quickly was going to say hope you’re ok and don’t have to wait too long xx
Gosh, I’m so sorry to hear that you have to repeat the procedures, even though it technically sounded like good news? It would be kinder if they were to see you in person, along with a BCN present, to at least give you clear explanations and a shoulder to lean on. I wish you all the best.
I’m quite confused. The Consultant is essentially saying that the areas of Microcalcification weren’t reached even though the mammogram shows lots of areas so it’s not good news at this point becauae they haven’t been able to biopsy the indeterminate microcalcifications . Thank you for your replied x
My biopsy was fine but I was supposed to have my 10 mm tumour removed under local anaesthetic as part of a a clinical trial . The procedure was similar to the way that they take biopsies but they go back in over and over until there’s nothing left . It’s worked on lots of women and for benign breast conditions as well but it didn’t work for me. I was in an hour longer than planned and 40 tissue samples were taken but only 8 came back positive for cancer .
In my case my breasts are not very dense and my tumour was moving and the Radiologist said it pinged away . Because a haematoma had started to form she then couldn’t see where it had gone and had to stop . I later had a lumpectomy under GA to remove the remainder + margins.
I don’t know how they failed to get anything in your case but the structures they are targeting are very tiny in many cases and not fixed in place . Maybe they need to have a rethink about how best to position you or something .
Perhaps if you call the BCN she might be able to clarify it for you xx
It sounds like you have had quite an ordeal. I haven’t been assigned a nurse so feel like this whole process (6 weeks) I’ve been left to it with no support really.
It was some time ago - waiting for the result of the check mammogram when I already knew it hadn’t been successful was the worst part and aside from the surgeon who rang to say that 8 samples had been positive therefore they weren’t going to operate straight away in case it had all been got after all nobody contacted me either . I wasn’t on this forum either so I felt very alone at times. I was angry but I got over it - whatever happens you will too .
Might be worth you ringing up and asking if you can speak to a BCN - even if you haven’t been assigned one there may be a phone number or email address that you could leave a message . You could also talk to the nurses on the helpline here - they may be able to explain a few things and give you some advice . Xx
