Rippling following implant reconstruction

I’m going to have a mastectomy soon and when i met with my surgeon he said that due to my low bmi i would be most suitable for reconstruction with an implant. He talked me through it but did mention that sometimes the implant creases and that can form ripples in the breast and that this is more likely to happen of you are slim. This has put me off somewhat. Do you know how common this rippling is?

Hi brighton765

Thank you for your post.

It is common to have some rippling following breast reconstruction using an implant particularly if you are slim. This often settles over time, but sometimes it can be ongoing. There are other surgical procedures like lipomodelling that can be done in the future if the rippling were to persist but the surgeon would discuss this with you to see if it would be appropriate.

Sometimes, talking to someone who has had a similar experience can be helpful. Our Someone Like Me service can match you with a trained volunteer who’s had an implant based breast reconstruction who can share their personal experiences to answer your questions, offer support or simply listen to how you are feeling.

Also have a look at Keeping Abreast, they offer support for people considering breast reconstruction.
