Hello. I’m new here and send warm wishes to everyone on the forum. I had Grade 1 breast cancer 18 months ago, needed just a small op and 15 days radiothereapy. I claimed on my SAGA health insurance with for the operation, outpatient attendance and consultations. It wasn’t a huge cost. When my policy was renewed it had soared by 50%. I assumed it was because I lost my no-claims bonus, but I gather from SAGA that I would only have lost 10% of it. I still don’t have a satisfactory answer as to why the cost went up so dramatically (other than age-related etc). I will only need to make a small claim this year and they explained that if I paid this cost myself, the policy fee may not go up quite so much next year. What?!! I didn’t expect to have private health insurance and then have to juggle the figures to see whether it’s more financially sensible to pay some of the treatment myself. Has anyone experienced the same with SAGA and are there other health insurance providers who would be happy to take on a grade 1 BC sufferer. Many thanks
Hello,
Not with Saga but Bupa and since leaving work who paid for it nearly 4 years ago, I have paid the premiums myself.
To enable me to carry on with PMI at a prem I could afford( well not really afford!)l have had to have a excess of £ 2000.00 for the last 2 years, which brought it down to under £200 per month, as the premiums were increasing by quite a lot of money each year. Its now 11 years since diagnosis and was having a checkup with my Onc and a mamogram and checkup with my surgeon each year although last year I did have an MRI, all these I had to pay for as they were under £2000.00. Both have now discharged me and I have only seen the Onc this year so I should expect to see the premiums come down but I bet they don’t.
I called to cancel the policy in Feb this year and was offered 3 months free so as it was a bit of a saving I took it but as all this money is coming out of my savings I think I will cancel this Feb unless the prems come down considerably. I thought that the further away from Diagnosis would mean a decrease but it seems it doesn’t.
I would think that you would have to be referred to the underwriting dept if you moved somewhere else to go through all your details, health etc. I did think that I may get a quote from another company but I bet they won’t cover the cancer. I was stage 2 by the way with 6/17 nodes affected.
Its a very difficult decision to make if you have PMI and come across this, although when I had my MRI scan I could have got it at a special price if I had self funded, so my Onc told me!.
