I bought bio-oil for mine which was quite expensive. My surgeon told me any oil will do the same job though so when I’m done this bottle will be looking at cheaper alternatives. My mastectomy scar is actually healing really well and not pink already. Other scars from the (failed) diep and mammoplasty are still very pink after 6 months but hoping will fade with time.
Hi good luck with mastectomy
I used Aveeno cream /childs farm moisturiser any non perfumed and gentle cream hence baby cream was recommended to me , mine has healed well looks good now .Xx
I use apricot kernel oil. Can be used all over body including massaging into scars. It doesnt have any nasty petrochemicals in it and easy to massage with. I buy from Amazon and decant into and empty glass spice bottle or a travel spray bottle.
Hope all goes well for you on Saturday
I didn’t like Bio oil and switched to jojoba oil - the chemical structure bears a similarity to human skin oil so it’s very natural and hypoallergenic . I found it melted nicely into the skin and helped to remove the sticky residue of the dressings easily. Later I switched to Aveeno daily which I still use all over my body and is more affordable . Hope everything goes well for you . Xx
I was told to avoid oil-based stuff. I used Garnier Intensive 7 Day she
a butter hand cream as it was so good at hydrating. My scar and skin healed quickly and looked good PDQ too. Being non-sticky helped too - no stained clothes or bedding etc
Hi @motherducky
Don’t forget to ask consultant when you can use moisturisers , mine said would tell me when safe to use when your healed enough xx[quote=“motherducky, post:1, topic:134727, full:true”]
Hi all, I hope you are all managing to find a little bit of sunshine in your life today and those who aren’t I’m sending you a big hug!
I have my mastectomy on Saturday and although I won’t be using it for a while but what would people recommend as a good cream for my scars for after?
I’m determined to look after my scars properly to ensure where possible they heal as much as they can.
All the best for you operation. Rest is a grest healer. I didnt put anything on my scar until end of week 6, now daily doublebase gel / cream that I am prescribed for my lymphodema arm ( long story) Works great . You can buy doublebase cheaply from pharmacy. BTW I had my MX 8 weeks ago and went back to the gym today and had my arm straight above my head holding a weight ! Felt v proud.
I used Bio Oil and the radiotherapy team were so impressed how my scars looked 6 months after surgery. There is a cheaper version called Ren Gen oil that’s recommended by Cancer Hair Care charity on aLook Good Feel Better online course. Another cancer rehab specialist recommended Rosehip oil if you wanted something more natural.
Many people recommend unfragranced creams made for eczema such as Cetrabran etc.
I treated my scars after the doctor checked the wounds and agreed.
I did a scar therapy workshop with Penny Brohn charity and session 1&2 are below. They used to do a 4 week course with Kate Oldham so there may be more sessions uploaded to YouTube. Lots of shorts for massaging scars aswell.
Will be thinking of you tomorrow, wishing you lots of love.
Take good care, and all the help offered eat good food drink plenty of water don’t forget your exercises. When your feel a bit better let us know how your getting on.
Neil’s yard avocado oil. Amazing for any scars if put on night and morning. My lumpectomy scar practically went then it was operated on again as not enough margin, scar and skin all mangled so couldnt be bothered to use it. Husband has used it on all his new joint scars and again hardly see them x
Hi, Once there are no scabs, can use a silicone dressing that helps flatten the scar, such as Cica-Care. Can get via a prescription on NHS too. Worked well for me. Hope all goes well.
Hi don’t know what happened my post added to @motherducky was given her advice on scar treatment she was having mastectomy on Saturday wish you well motherducky , but thank you for well wishes xx
I’m doing well. They let me home yesterday so I’m in my own bed. Can’t get comfy but feeling good. Op took 7 hours and went well. Stomach is sore as is boob but on the road to recovery x
