Scared of post op drain removal

Hi all, I am 5 days post SMX with 2 drains which are due to be removed on Monday and I am really scared of the thought of it and the pain. Any wonderful tips to help?

Hello. Please don’t be scared. I had double mastectomy in July and my two drains were removed on day five.
One side had always been painful and the suction kept stopping so I think it was always problematic - when that side was removed there was like a hiss like when you open a fizzy drink, but it didn’t hurt more than the drain being there, in fact it was a huge relief.
The other side was no problem at all.
The BCN said to take a breath when she pulled the tube out but to be honest, I didn’t feel anything.
I’m sure you’ll be fine xx

I second what @lynnc123 has said, i could feel movement as the drain was removed, but no pain at all. Please don’t worry :heart:xxx

Hi, it really is nothing. I had one each side, the doctor asked me to briefly hold my breath and then they were out. Didn’t feel anything.

I’ll add to that. It is a quick and painless process. Just breathe in and breathe out slowly as the nurse removes the tube. It’s done before you know it!

I absolutely empathise with you on this. I am so squeamish and was totally dreading having my drains removed. But it really is fine. Honestly, the thought/concept of it is way worse than the actual sensation, and it’s so quick. You’ll be fine. Try to put it out of your mind (so much easier said than done, I know). Distraction is key :+1: Sending positivity and best wishes x

I had myself so worked up over the drain removal. Literally felt sick with nerves and afterwards I felt so silly as it was a walk in the park! Nurse told me to take a deep breath and then it was done. Was surprised at how long the drain was and it made a strange noise but after I was like is that it? :joy: Please don’t be worrying- I’m a huge baby about things like that so if I found it easy you will too

Just wanted to update you all to say I had my drains removed today. I was so scared but I am pleased to say you were all right and I should have listened to you all instead of the dark anxiety voice in my head. It was not painful at all and I am so relieved they are out. Thank you all so much xx
