Hi everybody, I have been on a number of websites that people on these forums have kindly recommended, to look at wigs, scarves etc and I’ve ordered a wig, some eyebrows and ONE scarf to have on standby. However I wondered if anyone knows any actual shops where you can get really nice scarves, where you can go in and actually look and feel them before you buy them? I don’t want to keep ordering them off the internet and pay postage and packing and have to faff about returning them if I don’t like them. I just went for a plain black one to get me started but obviously if I am going to have no hair all summer I will want a good selection of scarves in different colours. Would department stores be by best bet or does anyone know of any other shops like chain stores that do anything suitable? Thanks in advance. I start my chemo on 17th March but I’m going on holiday on Friday 7th for a week so I am trying to be organised. xx
Hey clarabel
you may not lose your eyebrows, I’m halfway through and all the hair is gone, my eyelashes are departing day by day, but eyebrows are hanging in there. I’m on fec and tax. At my chemo ward there is a nice lady who sells scarves etc, she shows you how to tie them all nice. Speak to you BC nurse, she can probably help. I use a scarf/hat called a buff - you can get them in a loads of colours and designs and they’re about £10. I’ve got 5 now. You can get ones specifically for the summer/warm weather, stops UV light and keeps your head cool. like wise there are regular ones and winter ones too. google buff headwear for the official site.
Good luck

Hi Clarabel,
Sorry I can’t help much as all the scarves I bought I hardly ever wore! But I wore two old scarves to death - both thin cotton, so not slippy at all. I tied them at the back and let the ends hang down, to compensate for my long hair. And buffs - really comfy and stay on safely, although I don’t like the back of my neck/scalp being on show, and the buff was sometimes a bit high at the back (depends how you wear it). I’ve worn a wig mostly, since I found one I liked. Now my hair’s growing back, and I’ll soon have to think what to do with it and when to stop wearing the wig! Hope this reassures you that yours will come back too.
All the best for your treatment

Hi Clarabel
I found the dept stores unhelpful as all the scarves were long and rectangular rather than square. Tie Rack has a good selection of plain and patterned square scarves, but mostly slippery fabrics. I ended up trawling the charity shops and found a couple of cotton scarves there, and then appealed to all my female friends who went through their cupboards and showered me in long-forgotten Christmas presents! And I agree with the comments above about buffs, though they are more expensive than scarves. I got most of my scarves from Hats4Heads, not expensive and v quick delivery ( within 5 days).
Good luck with all of this. I must say that I found losing my hair much less upsetting than I expected and in some ways quite trivial compared with other side effects.
All the best

Hi,
I’m still recovering from the op as I had to go back to remove lymph glands but I have been doing some research and my daughter says that Monsoon’s Accessorise Shops have a good range of scarves in at the moment. Hope this helps.

Hi Clarabel,
I found great scarves at H&M for about £5, silky Hermes lookalikes which are about 70cm square. I find if they’re too small they move around so go for something at least 60cm. I also bought an extra wide black stretchy headband which is useful for wearing under hats where the back of my neck is exposed (chilly!). I too have managed to hold on to about 50% of my eyebrows and fill them in with a powder shadow from MAC which is great. Almost all my eyelashes have gone and can’t cope with false eyelashes but have found a good gel eyeliner from Bobbi Brown which gives good definition and is easy to apply.
Hope all goes well with your treatment,
love Louisa x
Try charity shops, my daughter did … lots there and so cheap … just wash them in case. She got some expensive ones too for under £1.

Hi everyone.
I had a scarf called a ‘beaubeau’. Had a few of them and they were just beautiful. Quite expensive but she shipped them from the US to the UK in under a week and was so helpful. They are a little more expensive than a normal scarf but I felt fantastic in them. I also felt fantastic going out bald which I did quite a lot too. She even custom made me one for my wedding. Hope this helps.

I got cotton square scarves from an ethnic type shop - you know, the sort that has chimes hanging from the ceiling & smells of incense. They had loads in different colours for £5 each.
thanks for your input everyone. I am going to have the scalp cooling but am aware I still have a 1 in 3 chance of hair loss. I think I will keep a look out every shop I go past lol! I know my hair won’t fall out the minute I leave the chemo ward so I will see who is around to chat to - I have the number of a BC nurse and might have a chat to her too. Thanks again xx
Hi everyone .I have just had FEC x2 and there is not much hair left, eyebrows and lashes ok at the momment. i have a nice wig for going outside in, but have found the cheap towelling turban wraps that you can find at the pound shop or also on ebay quite useful. they are soft warm and cheap, also i feel ok answering the door or going in the garden , you look like you have just washed your hair (if only!!)
Have ordered some sleep hats from the usa on ebay too, head is a bit chilly at night especially around the back of the neck.
All the best

Hi,
Ive had 3 FEC, eyebrows and eyelashes hanging on, I bought some cotton buffs from Headcovers.com theyre in USA, I wear a pink terry towelling turban type thingy around the house, caps, beanies, and buffs for now outside and in work, then scarves in the summer.Ive heard cotton scarves hang on better, you can get a thin cotton plain headcover to wear under hats and scarves, which helps the scarves stay put.
hope this helps a bit,
Take care,

Hello all
Somewhere on here I was reading about SuburbanTurban - and they have the best scarves that wrap into really great turbans. I do not have a wig, and these great scarves have arrived today. Much fun being had in practice, and I will wear out tomorrow. I bought 4 different colours, of a choice of about 20, I think.
Worth a look! Google SuburbanTurban will get you there.

Hi Clarabel and others. I start on 6 FEC on 19 March.
I’m mildly irritated at the thought of losing my hair as it’s now in a short (pink) bob - longest it’s been for 30 years! I’m having a short cut tomorrow and colouring it again…might as well go out blazing. I’m planning on having a mohiecan for a short while after the first treatment til it all falls out. (Can’t remember who I nicked that idea off but I’ve always fancied one!)
Got a nice hat in Matalan yesterday (cap think with a very full crown) for only 3 quid and expecting a wig appointment in the next few days.
Thanks for useful tips on eyeliner and brow makeup. As I have a quite ‘strong’ face, I’m quite scared of looking like a bloke with no hair. Must make more effort!
Off I go to google buffs…

Thank you AnnMC! I read your post and visited the surburban turban website, the scarves arrived yesterday and I’m really delighted with them…so many colours too, just what I was looking for!
If you see a shop selling backpacks or outdoorsy things pop in as they will sell buffs too, but the biggest range is online at buffwear.
