Second ultrasound after MRI with contrast. Why?!

Dear all

I had an MRI with contrast yesterday. Today I was called and asked to go in for a follow up ultrasound next week. I freaked out slightly but was told that MRI can throw everything up and not to panic. Has anyone else been through the same thing? Is it normal?

Hey @newbie1 - I had a similar thing happen after my breast MRI. They found a ‘suspicious’ lump in my other breast. I had to have a follow up ultrasound and biopsy of the lump, it turned out to be a fibroadenoma. My breast care nurse said that breast MRIs often show up lots of things and quite often they turn out being benign. Atleast they are on the ball and checking things out for you. All the best for your treatment xx

Ah thanks so much. The person who phoned said I hadn’t been out on red alert grade (is that even a thing) but wanted to book me in. At the moment my cancer is grade 1 and I guess I’m terrified something much higher will be found xx

I was recalled last year to have an ultrasound after an MRI and it turned out to be a cyst (very common). Why they can’t do an ultrasound as a routine instead of an MRI I don’t know. I’ve had another routine MRI 10 days ago (mammograms never show anything for me bc of tissue density) and I’m still waiting for the results. At least you’ve had your result quickly and the ultrasound will hopefully put your mind at rest. Bonne chance. X

I totally get how you must have felt and I hope very much that you are making progress and received positive news.
I’m in a similar situation of ‘scanxiety’. I had an MRI last week and am due to get results tomorrow - feeling very nervous. It all started with me finding a tiny lump and being referred to one-stop-breast-clinic - nothing showed up on mammogram or ultrasound but consultant could feel the lump too so she did a biopsy which came back with stage 1 invasive ductal carcinoma, which was a shock. I know that MRI picks up many things, some of which are perfectly benign and that it is common practice to do use the MRI as a kind of roadmap for follow-up ultrasound biopsies if required, so they have all the facts for a treatment plan.
I have no idea how many ultrasound biopsies might be necessary (if any). I know no-one can tell me the answers other than my doctors tomorrow - just kind of sharing my anxiety with people who will understand the feeling. Has anyone else done ultrasound-guided biopsy after MRI?
