Secondary cancer incurable?

Why is secondary cancer always classed as incurable?
I’m just asking this as a factual question as I’m seeking to understand

Hi mary4,

Thank you for posting.

Secondary breast cancer (also called metastatic or stage 4) occurs when breast cancer cells spread from the breast to other parts of the body. When cancer cells have spread, the cancer can’t be completely removed (for example with surgery), so secondary breast cancer can’t be cured. However it can be treated and some people can live for many years. Treatment aims are to control and slow down the spread of the cancer, relieve symptoms and help maintain a good quality of life for as long as possible.

Living with secondary breast cancer can be a worrying time. If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with secondary breast cancer, we offer a range of free supportive services which may be of interest.
