Has anyone got realyl sensitive teeth after chemo and/or radiotherapy? i finished my treatment in September '09 and since March '10 I’ve had really sensitive teeth, my gums are receeding and it feels like i’ve got foil in my teeth so its quite painful.
I’m currently using tooth mousse and sensitive toothpaste but its still so bad.
Has anyone got the same and if so what have you done to get rid of it?
I have had problems with sensitive teeth which I think is from my treatmemt etc. I also have a crown and this in particular was really painful. I couldn’t drink or eat anything hot or cold. If it touched my crown it was quite unbearable. It has got better recently. I’m 12 months post chemo/rads. My hygenist painted this film on my teeth - it really did help.
I’ve experienced those, too during my chemo. Just don’t know whether it’s related to chemo or not. Went to the dentist and had 2 fillings done and a few weeks later, one of them got infected somehow. I might have to end up having the tooth out… GREAT! xx
I finished chemo back in February & am now having problems with my teeth too.
I haven’t needed any treatment in nearly 10 years & now all of a sudden I need 4 fillings! I’ve managed to chip my front tooth & there’s something strange going on with my gums! The whole top left side is numb, as is part of my top lip! My Dentist took some xrays the other day to see what’s going on!
Flippin steroids & chemo! Apparantly is quite common! :o(
I like you finished treatment in September 2009 and have been referred to the dental hospital by my dentist due to deterioration in my gums. They are deep cleaning my teeth in stages as the gums had really calcified because I couldnt go to the dentist for so long during chemo.
I have no dental problems, touch wood, went for a check up last month, my first since started this journey. However I do have horrible neuropathy in both hands & feet, which I discussed with onc last month, when she told me some people get it in their mouths, so I wonder if that’s what you have ?
I’ll mention that to my Dentist when I’m back on Friday. Best discuss it before he starts freezing my mouth with the huuuuuge big needle!! Don’t wanna be drooling as I speak! Lol
Hi Everyone, hope you don’t mind me jumping in. I’m having chemo at the moment for secondary in the liver and spine. I’ve noticed that my teeth feel a bit strange on occasion, almost as if they’re loose,
but so far they seem to be staying put (thank goodness).
Diwy1 - Can I just ask how the neuropathy affects you. I keep on getting a numb patch just over one cheekbone. It’s not there all the time, just every couple of days and doesn’t long. I asked the chemo nurse and she just said she’d never heard of anything like that. I’d be really interested to know what this neuropathy is all about. Thanks in advanvce.
Otherwise, hope you are all coping and feeling fit today. Lotsa love, Dianne x x x
My feet are numb & sometimes very tight. It’s hard to descibe but they’re so numb that they’re painful at times. Also there is a numb/prickly patch up the front of my right ankle & up the back of my lower left leg. My fingertips are a bit numb also, but not as painful as the feet.
I’ve had increased sensitivity in my teeth and couldn’t bear to have them cleaned by the dentist when I last went in November. Unfortunately, the chemo stained one of my front teeth and that would require cosmetic work to hide it rather than cleaning anyway.

Hi Everyone, thanks so much for getting back to me, i was really worried as my cancer nurse told me that she’d never come across it before so you’ve all put my mind at ease.
hi i finished chemo in october and after i suffered with sensative teeth for a while, dentist prescribed me some sensative toothpaste and then i used one off the shelf too. they did help and all seems well at the min (fingers crossed)
Take care luv pauline xxx
So I’m not the only one then! I’ve had 4 epirubicins and I think after the 2nd one, I’m aware of my teeth throbbing. Not particularly pleasant. Will have to try the sensitive toothpaste.
How great this site is. I was just logging on to ask the same question about sensitive teeth. I’m in the middle of rads and last week thought I was in danger of all my fillings dropping out. I even thought it was bad enough to reduce my calorie consumption for a few days but luckily I was able to battle through! Asked the radiographer and she said occasionally people complain about their teeth hurting but she thought it was temporary. I wondered if it was some sort of reaction to the old mercury fillings I have in my back teeth.

Gosh loose teeth - so I wasn’t imagining it then! I’m 8 months post chemo (4 ec and 4tax) and whilst I still use a sensitive toothpaste, my teeth are firmly attached to my gums again, thank goodness. I used dilute corsodyl everyday during chemo and still take a lot more care over dental hygiene than I used to.
Teeth have managed to stand steady throughout, and am finished with all treatment (apart from the obligatory daily tablet), but every single tooth has gone a lovely shade of yellow … attractive - not.
Hi girls,
I noticed during chemo that when my blood count was low, my teeth would ache. That was 2 years ago, and I still suffer from really achy, sensitive teeth from time to time. Apart from having a good (gentle) go with the dental floss, I’ve started taking iron tablets at these times, as it is such a similar feeling. It seems to lessen after a day or two but i have no idea if that’s why!
Hope this helps someone
Jxx
I also feel that my teeth are more discoloured since treatment but my dentist says not so maybe I’m imagining it. She did relieve me of £5 though for some special fluoride toothpaste as she says I have some ‘pouching’ - sounds lovely. Although this special toothpaste is made by Colgate, you’ve guessed it, it’s only available from dentists so no chance of getting it cheaper. Do they see us coming or what ?
