I am in awe of you lot. I’m just eating pies …and potates. .and cheese…

Chas I don’t start chemo until Friday 13th but jumped on September thread to get tips from you lovely ladies who are a little bit ahead xxx

Hello everyone,

I live in Bristol so already go to Penny Brohn and start my counselling there this week.  The food is delicious.

Cathy, was it you who mentioned the Anti Cancer book a while back? I read half before I started to feel too ill so will endeavour to finish it off.  I have even persuaded my husband to go ‘flexitarian’  (mainly vegetarian with fish and occasional meat. Organic grass fed where possible).  I’ve always been very keen on 5-10 veg/fruit a day , very low sugar, low processed meat etc but have not done the whole organic thing.  My husband loves sugar and the convenience of processed foods so it has been a bit of a battle previously  (but I do most of the cooking). At the moment we are getting a lot of meals delivered by lovely friends.  I don’t really feel able to ask them to change what they want to cook to suit me so it may be a while before we can fully do our new improved diet.

I’ve done a bit of the Chris beats cancer stuff too- that seems a bit more extreme. He is very watchable, seems genuine  and very healthy looking but I guess I’m not so comfortable with the marketing methods used to buy the course especially to a ‘vulnerable’ audience (like us!).

I’m off the steroids today, still coughing and not really keen to get dressed and go out for a walk. Harder when it is not sunny.

And Cathy, I would love a summary of Chris’ tips please.

Thanks x

I have spent the last week reading all 25 pages of this thread for tips etc. I start on Wednesday so I am officially on the October thread but I will continue to follow the progress of you lovely ladies too. The info posted is so useful. My biggest fear is excessive sickness, I have quite a phobia of being sick and felt awful with morning sickness with my 4 pregnancies so not looking forward too that side at all. Have been eating carb free for most of the past year but stocking up on bread, biscuits and crackers as carbs filled that horrible gnawing emptiness back then.

I am finding that carbs are favourable with me at the mo. They are easy to eat and dont cause me tummy problems. I think we just need to eat what we can, when we can and keep our strength up. There are lots of ladies on here who have always esten healthy and had healthy lifestyles and have still got BC. Lets just do what we can xxx

You are right. I aim to eat healthily but after the chemo when I feel nauseaous it’s mainly potatoes or anything I can face. It’s more imprortant at that stage to eat something and keep your strength up, even if it’s not the most nutritious option!
There is now way round it really apart from getting in some nutritious food in between chemos when you can.
I have been on organic food for a couple of years and mainly vegetarian sugar free diet. It didn’t stop me getting cancer but I’m sure it will stand me in good stead for a speedy recovery and keeps me as healthy as I can be.
Jow - I agree with you about chrisbeatscancer. Loads of useful information in there, but I wouldn’t just count on nutrition and supplements to cure my cancer like he did, and don’t think I could be as extreme as him with dietary restrictions. I just take the bits I think I can fit into my life and hope they all add up to help increase my chances.

ChasandDave go you good thing! I think we are all showing as a collective group there are such variations of diet that suit some but not others that it’s OK to do our own thing and agree that at this stage is getting the nutrition in rather than a lack- in whatever form it comes. To those stocking up I am finding the things I gorged on first round am not eating and drinking this round so maybe not overbuy.
In my head I am separating what I eat now from my planned diet post treatment which helps me not feel bad if I don’t fancy healthy stuff at the moment - next year I will be wholesome promise!
Day 5 round 2 today and pretty whacked now steroids stopped, ondansetron making me really flushed and something has aggravated both surgery wounds which is so frustrating after ops in June and July - they are healed but bleeding underneath so the bruising is constant, sore and limits what I can do grr. Lucky that my mouth not bad at all this time and no probs with taste - and haven’t actually been sick at all so it seems to not be compulsory to throw up.
Anyway good Sundays all to the befores and the afters xx

Hi Fairydust sorry you are sore - I have very curly hair so a lot of mine has been kept kind of trapped on my head but is really out if you get me - so I washed it yesterday and removed a lot of it that way and my head is not now sore at all and still have some strands left - not sure if this will help. I haven’t put any oil on just used my nice soft conditioner. Good luck with getting more comfortable x

Fairy have you got a v pillow
I have got one and when I lie on it my head doesn’t make full contact not sure if one would help you as I not started yet but might be worth consider xx

Enjoy the jelly and hope that your head eases soon. A lot of people seem to find that it hurts less if it is short. I have had mine cut short in the hope that it might help. Problem is I really like my new style and it is so easy to look After so don’t want to loose it now!
I can’t sleep either, just treated myself to a bowl of cornflakes and a nice cup of tea in my lovely peaceful kitchen. Going to head back to bed now and hope for some sleep, hope you get some too.

Hi fairy hope you managed to get some sleep x
Chaffinch hope you got some sleep too x
Have a good day everyone x

V pillow is a must thanks to Sue W. I got one from Dunelm £12 and £5 for satin cover! I actually can fall asleep propped up on it and it helps my achy back and neck from the GCSF injections.xx

Morning ck happy to see you
Chaffinch and fairy midnight feasts remind me of childhood sleepovers with my cousins when all the food and snacks was gone by 9 pm because we could not last out until midnight x
Hope you enjoyed your middle of the night snacks and you manage to catch up on your rest today x

Hope you are ok CK. Just wondering how the injections affect us? I am finding them easy to do but have had a gurgling tummy, i am conscoius of my heartbeat, a bit light headed and a bit achy. Or is this all just from the treatment?

Hello fairydust, my head was also very painful, it almost felt bruised, just touching the hair made my head feel like it was on fire. That was just before second chemo on Friday (just coming out the fog). Even the power of the shower made it hurt. I gently rubbed aveeno into it and covered it in a soft beanie every night (bit messy but very soothing). Once it started falling out properly, not just shedding a bit it felt ok again and then went really itchy!! It’s fine now there’s more or less no hair. I was a bit worried for a bit. I really hope it passes for you soon xx

Funny I was also vege for 22 years, but started eating meat again cos of what I threw away with the kids. Now I sit in bed and imagine curries, roasts, pizzas, fruit…literally anything…then can’t actually eat a lot of anything! So I’m a snacker too…like spicy things as my taste buds seem to have gone with my hair lol

Ali49 I think you are right, just keeping the energy up is important and calories going in at this stage.

Chasanddave now all I can think of is a cheesy pie ummmmm x

Hi Ali
Saw you on the other thread. The injections will give you lower back and maybe belly pain. I was achy all over yesterday but fine today. I have 7 to do the day after chemo. One the weeks coure done then I feel fine. I just think that they are doing their job and take painkillers before and baths with Epsom salts.x
