September 2017 Chemo Starters

Hi Cath.
I’m doing ok thanks. Taking the anti sickness when I need it. It’s pretty good but you can tell when I wears off. Seems to last about 8 hours or so. Feeling tired and groggy today so me and my dog are having a duvet day. I’m normally a busy person so it’s nice to actually rest up for a bit. Mouth is a bit dry but have plenty of mints and sweets to suck.

Hope you’re doing well

Hi Fairydust
Sorry to hear that. I did ask if theres any way of contriling cells but they just said Manuka honey maybe will help.

No, hes sacked! Concentrate on ME! Not him!

I need to be with positive peiole right now and my ladies here!

Whyefawn, have you not got back up ones for after the 2 days? Duvet day it is for all of us especially in this weather!x

Day 3 of chemo 2.
Just tired and bit of a tight chest! Temp fine, had mince and tatties abd been working on laptop.
2nd injection, lets hope paracetamol can help again orherwise Ibroprofen is gonna come out too!! Xx

Fairydust, so sorry to hear that your white blood still low and you have to miss the chemo. Can they not give you more nivestin ? Xx

Hi All.
My friend told me that she did a neutropenic diet to try to keep herxwhite cells up and she didnt miss a treatment. She only ate fruit or veg that could be peeled. No salad, nothing processed, no meals out and no alcohol. It might be worth a try Fairydust.

I am still following the CK guide to Chemo myself.

So day 3 and not too bad. Awake from 1am due to steroids and just couldnt get back to sleep. Got up and had tea and toast. Went back for a couple of hours this morning and felt better. Did my first injection and that was easy. I took it out of the fridge and took 2 paracetamol half an hour before jabbing it!! I havent been dressed today but i have done the washing, hung it out and done ironing. I am glowing with the steroids and i have been the loo!!! Hope everyone is feeling better and ok xx

Hi CK I have a box of 30 anti sickness tablets and can only take 3 per day so technically 10 days worth so I’m sorted for those. Ordered a sleep hat and a scarf today. Live better with cancer website has 30% off until tomorrow night. If you go on the website the offer code is displayed at the top of the page.

Hi Whytefawn
Thanks for the 30% offer. Ive ordered bits from them but now 30% off might have another browse!
Good that you are sorted!

Ali
Great that you are in control. It realky doesnt matter what time night or day we need to eat we eat! Toast, biscuits, croissants, cereal, milk, soya milk, in my case shepherds pie. Today I had mince and mash, and cauliflower cheese and bacon!
Again not napped today so hopefully sleep better tonight again. Only woke up once last night.x

Fairydust
Just a spoonful every morning and night on its own! Its bloody expensive though. Around £20 a jar! I think it will help throat and mouth too!
Communication with your man is good! Mine didnt and said he was depressed. …SACK!!! Cant be doing with it!!!x

Carhysid
Our taste buds alike this week! Potatoes everything. Im on day 3 but still waiting.xx

Fairydust, nivestin is the injection that we have start on day 3 after chemo for 7 days. to encourage the bone marrow making more white cells xx

First rough night for me last night. Have felt nauseous all night. Took an extra anti sickness at 4am which helped a bit. Got a gurgling tummy and just feeling rough. Day 4 !

Wishing you all well post chemo. In a few days the fog will lift and you will feel well again. Hang on in there!

Fairy dust - lots of us have been given nivestim or filgrastim injection to give ourselves daily for 7 days after chemo to stimulate the bone marrow to produce more white blood cells and keep our white cell counts up - worth asking if you can have it. The injections aren’t as bad as they sound.
Also I take a supplement called bio strath - some studies showed it helped reduce side affects and help white cells when having chemo. The liquid version tastes grim though so go for the capsules if you decide to try it!!!
Love Cath x

Ali49 I am rougher day 4 too and felt similar in the night. The new wonder antisickness that I had prior to chemo was supposed to wear off after 3 days so I guess that was it - now taking the last day of steroids and also have ondansetron to start today and have come out in a bright red flush up chest neck and face - temp normal so will just suck it up. So staying put for a while and looking out on a sunny Saturday from bed. Hope everyone else is brightening and has a good day x

Fairydust neither of my chemos have involved injections just the way my unit does things - I think the final 3 rounds do but not the FEC . Hope you get out to eat bread - I still only really fancy beige food like last time - weird! X

Mrs Meow
Join the miss Rosy cheeks, I got them both cycles!
But as you say temp fine! Like it rather than being pale.xx

Ali
I drank milk and croissants on those nights and propped myself up on V pillow to sleep. Found it easier to settle rather than lying down! It does pass, in 2 nights for me! Try to drink lots of fluid and put lemon in water, it helps the taste.xx

Day 4 cycle 2 for me!
Up to now apart from fatigue its manageable!

Eating well but picky! Head bare now but prepared and I look kind of cute! Slepping better than first cycle but maybe due to not napping as much during the day! Hope it wears off soon so I can have 2 normal weeks b4 next cycle!

Paracetamol b4 GCSF injections deffo helps! Epsom salts ready for soak in bath if get achy bones from it!

Coconut wax which rubbed into oil on head is nice and soothing and also protects follicles! And all over face and body so dont have dry skin!
Must put lip balm on dry lips every morning and night!

Rinse with mouthwash morning and night to avoid ulcers and sore gums. I stay away from deep fried foods as they give me ulcers! Gentle flossing too!

I think we shouldn’t mind resting indoors on these cold rainy days, I dont think Im missing out on too much! And we have an excuse to be lazy!

Hope my ladies are coping well whatever stage.xxx

Hi everyone, day 4 round 2 for me too

Have enjoyed reading your posts. Impressed that anyone is thinking about dating let alone working but makes for good entertainment. Cant believe Jeff has gone! My very long wig arrived on Thurs- the opinion is mixed.

This cycle is much better for me- perhaps easier without the expanding pulmonary embolism

Brain not so good tho and coughing lots especially at night so am v tired and in bed.

On top of the the plethora of antiemetics I tried sea bands this time. Nausea hasn’t been as bad - may just be placebo effect but probably worth a try. Can get from chemists or Amazon.

Sorry to hear your chemo was delayed Fairydust- I agree with others that you should ask for the gcsf injections.

Hope Geordie and Rhonaboat that you are ok out there too?

Ck - thank you. I’d be lost without your advice xxx

Hi
Another thing you can do to help rebuild your immune system is to eat a “rainbow” diet including all different coloured fruit and veg.
Orange coloured vegetables are especially good for the immune system, like carrots and butternut squash.
I drink freshly juiced carrot/beetroot/celery/lemon/ginger/garlic/kale every morning (except when I feel too sick!!!) to get a mega shot of vitamins.
Xxx

Hope you get over your cough soon jow x

Hi fairydust,
If your white blood cell count is low the hospital advise peeling all veg and fruit and not eating any that can’t be peeled.
My bloods have always been ok and I love my salad and fruit so much that I don’t avoid it - I just wash it well. I buy organic usually too.
A really good recipe book is “nourish” the cancer care cookbook from penny brohn cancer care. Penny brohn are an important cancer charity in Bristol. The recipes are all made to be super nutritious and cancer fighting. You can get the book on amazon or the penny brohn website shop. The inspirational soup book from the shop on the penny brohn website is amazing too.

Ps I’ve just done the square one course on “chrisbeatscancer” website. Loads of tips on diet, supplements, teas, exercise etc to help your body fight cancer and keep it away.
If anyone is interested just message me and I will give you a summary of the best tips from the course x

Thank you for recommendation Cathy I start October but just bought the nourish book off amazon x will give me chance to look at it before chemo starts on Friday 13th ?x

Fairy I bought a soup maker yesterday I make soup anyway but blitz it with food processor but it is big to get in and out so thought that would be easier and a good way to get veg x
