September 2023 Chemo Starters

Hi everyone, hopefully you are doing well, I can’t sleep after 4 am, I stay with my eyes open, I feel fine, a little constipated, How did the chemo go?What session are you in? Yesterday I had the graduation ceremony, I wore the wig, I cut my hair short, it was already falling out in big strips, now I’m short but it’s falling out and my scalp is bothering me.
The wig is a short bob, I had long hair before but I preferred a bob, it doesn’t look bad but it’s not comfortable either, for a few hours it’s tolerable I hope you are well, good luck for the girls who have chemotherapy tomorrow All my best wishes

Hi dear, all my best , I don’t have a cold cap,
After second EC next day my hair start falling down in stripes, scalp sore and uncomfortable, so I cut short nr 3.
I am using a wig and at home a cap.
EC went well second time, nausea you can beat with antisickness , talk with your nurse she will help you with all your queries. Open a diary and write all in and on your next meeting with the chemo nurse show her your notes.

@Camy_Radika Thank you! I dont feel they take the cold cap seriously where I am but then they are focusing on what is most important. In any case hair coming out in massive clumps or spades a week after second EC. I knew it was going to happen but still causing some anxiety. My children (5 and 9) have picked out a wig for me… so am all set  Nausea is possibly psychological - wanting to vomit each time I think about the smoothie I made while having the last chemo. Will write everything down as you suggest and hopefully can get a grip on that for next session. Good luck to you for the next one and thanks a lot for the feedback!

Hello everyone here.

Lovely graduation photo.

I thought I might share my age with you all, I’m 53. I get the impression we are a range of ages with lots of younger ladies too.

Went to clinic yesterday and apparently lady week my haemoglobin was lower so they took bloods yest, and depending on that, I may need an iron infusion. Also I thought I’d ask them to take blood pressure as I feel a bit dizzy sometimes. It was 80/48 seated which is very low but a bit higher standing. So they will keep an eye on that. Still having nosebleeds quite a bit too and hair loss really ramping up now towards the end of this cycle 1 of carbo/taxol. On the plus side, still managing a walk each day. Annemanc now great you went swimming. I haven’t had a bath post op yet…

Fingers crossed for carbo and taxol tomorrow. And fingers crossed for all of you and hope you all tolerate this as well as possible.

Hi dear, I had headache on my first chemo EC for 3 days, next session they advised me to not take paracetamol, only Nurofen , blood pressure was fine, the nurse said headache happened as a reaction to chemotherapy but not unusual.
Discuss with your oncology team about all you side effects.
@Louise07 noone noticed that I have a wig, they not even knows am with BC , I had a lovely day
I am 44 age old, 3 children 17, 11, 8 and I am happy they are very helpful around the house and very understanding.
Take care :sparkling_heart:

Ahhh congratulations @Camy_Radika :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: you look radiant!

One of my sister’s friends Eve has alopecia and wears amazing wigs. She passed on a few tips to me - so far not tried (as hair still here for now, no idea for how long tho!). Anyway, thought I’d pass on as you mentioned your wig wasn’t so comfy (although it looks fab).

Eve said that comfort bands were a game changer for her, and stopped her having wig headaches. They’re a little headband you wear underneath to keep everything in place. This is the one she suggested

You look lovely in the photo and should be really proud to have completed your course whilst coping with Cancer diagnosis and treatment. What a trooper.

Thank you @annemanc , hopefully you are doing well.
I saw in the presentation video how to wear the tape, I think it’s the best idea, I didn’t know about that, thank you very much, lucky me with this forum I tell you honestly here I also find attention and comfort and much more tips very useful.
Take care :kissing_heart:

Congrats on your graduation @Camy_Radika !!! Amazing to carry on with these things whilst going through treatment. And you’re right, we gotta be here for our kids. My 2 boys are 1 and 4, they are my everything. I’m back to work this week, next treatment on Wednesday, such a strange feeling to have to gear up to be sick

Loving the hair chat everyone! I skipped a cold cap, so only after one treatment (day 16) its now falling out, defo some weird scalp sensations, so I’m just gunna shave it all off tomos, thankful it’s coming into winter for days we can just throw on beanies!

My first treatment today and also skipped cold cap. Was told hair loss was universal on one of my drugs and couldn’t face it coming out in clumps and trying to save it. There is a good podcast episode on cold caps on You Me and the Big C for anyone thinking of it. I am going to brave the big shave tonight as this gives me a few days before I go back to work to get used to it and try out my new scarves and wig which arrived today. One small step before even that starts to fall out. If I can do a good enough job I’ll donate to Donate Hair to the Little Princess Trust. Although pity the child who gets my smattering of grey hair! At the moment I think the hair will be okay (although I may eat my words tomorrow) its the eyebrows and lashes I think I will struggle with. Good luck @mikki90 and see you on the other side of the weekend with our new looks.

Hi i had my third Paclitaxel today and within half an hour I began to feel sick. Then I was physically sick. I was in an outreach centre from Velindre Cancer Centre that was nurse led. They tried to get a doctor on the phone from Velindre to agree to give me anti sickness intravenously, that didn’t work, so walked into the nearby outpatients to see if a they could prescribe, no one available. Eventually after 20 minutes or so they got someone on the phone at Velindre and they agreed I could have anti sickness. By this time I’d been sick again. They had stopped my treatment and given iv piriton and hydrocortisone. As this was outreach with no doctors they were unable to restart my treatment. I have a history of allergies and feel I should never have been sent to an outreach. I felt unwell for 1 1/2 hours.

I had the cold cap on and didn’t feel cold at all this time, which I should have thought was odd as past two weeks I had to have a blanket to keep warm. They commented that I looked warm and flushed in the face.

They advised that the next two treatment will be in Velindre and that I will be prescribed medication to take before and after to help with the allergy. I have a clinic appointment next Tuesday and will be pushing for all treatment in Velindre as I don’t want this to happen again. Not just the sickness but the stopping of treatment.

Back with piriton tablets to take for next three days.

Anybody else had issues with allergic reactions? How was it handled?

@daffodil1 how are you doing on Paclitaxel? I’m 54 and using a cold cap, had some shedding so far but the reaction today I wanted to rip it off. They even left it on after they stopped the treatment for over an hour rather than 3/4, obviously more bothered about my reaction.

Hi @pinklilli3s welcome to the group. I’m on 12 weekly Paclitaxel. If you read my comments you can see how I go. Today was not a good day with allergic reactions. I do suffer with allergies anyway and regularly take antihistamines, so it may not be the same for others.

Jeez @naughty_boob so sorry you had to go through that. Being unwell during chemo must be horrid, even more so if there is a delay in agreeing how to tackle it. You are doing so well, every session is a step closer to being out the other side. I’m thinking I might buy a daft sequin jumpsuit to wear when I ring the bell.

I had my second three weekly EC today, all fine though I did feel like I might feint when they switched on the cold cap. But passed fairly quick. Just spaced out now, and slightly wired from the roids (but not in a bad way). There was a lovely woman Sat next to me in the chemo ward called Dawn, chatting to her was great. I should have mentioned this group! Xxxx

Hi dear,
I have the same sensation on my scalp too. I went today to the hair salon but they won’t save me, but I had a nice massage on my scalp and still left half cm of my hair, I laughed with my brother, he is already bald for a few years, so I showed him a picture of me bald, we almost look like twins :star_struck: i. It doesn’t really bother me that I’m bald, I was more bothered when it fell out and the weird scalp pain.
About work, here in Ireland they wouldn’t let me go back to work until I finished treatment . Honestly, I would like to work, but my boss supports me, so I will only start working next year.I hug you with love, take care of yourselves.
