Seroma? Haematoma? 5 days post lumpectomy

Hi, surgery seems to go ok on Tuesday and I’ve been doing exercises.

I have a large, painful lump under the dressing- so I can’t see it but it’s very sore to touch and hard.

I’m booked in to see the my gp practice nurse tomorrow but am wondering what this might be and if there’s anything I can do in the meantime?

I’ll keep taking paracetomol too.

Hi I had a heamatoma after surgery it felt hot and swollen but was on breast recon not under my arm. Dont overdo the exercises thats what I think set mine off. I hope the practice nurse can help but Id also call your bcn for advice as well. Take care & go steady xx

Hi there

It’s likely you’ll probably have some swelling under there if you only had your lumpectomy on Tuesday plus, in my experience, dressings can make the surgical area feel worse as they can add bulk and tightness. The area under my lumpectomy incision still feels hard and lumpy and I’m still having some pain, although minimal and very manageable, almost six weeks on. As you say though, there’s always the possibility of a seroma or haematoma so it’s good that you’ll be seeing your practice nurse tomorrow and, as previously mentioned, it might be good to contact your BCN too.

In the meantime, if I were in your position, I would keep taking the pain relief as you’ve said, try not to touch the area as this could aggravate it (I know this can be difficult, I had an obscene amount of ever evolving mad bruising that I really had to train myself to stop constantly looking at!) and have a cosy evening in with a film, book or whatever floats your boat.

Then it’ll be tomorrow before you know it.

Hi, it wasn’t either thankfully! The dressing hard gone rock hard over a sore area, so that’s what the lump was.
