Should I have chemo

Hi. I am RosaI have had a therautic mammoplasty,to remove two tumours, which are grade 2 and oestrogen fed. They were vascular invasive.Being grade 2 and 2cms, I was offered the onycotype test, I was unsure about chemo. The results came back 18, which is high end of low risk and low end of medium. My dr has explained all statistics and says I would not really benefit having chemo. He also said, results are not always 100%. The choice is mine whether to go down the road of chemo. I want to do all that I can to make sure all traces are gone. Has anyone else with similar results had to make this choice? Would love to hear from you. Thank you.

Hi  I think you have had pretty positive news but I know it is difficult when the doctors tell you to decide for yourself. I had grade 2 IDC and a small area of DCIS so had mastectomy too.   I had a test similar to Oncotype (a  trial at the Royal Marsden) and my score was firmly in the low category but the oncologist did say before the results came back that she was pretty sure that chemo was unlikely to be of benefit the reason being that chemo is most effective on grade 3 cancers because it targets the fast growing cells.   My understanding of the genomic assay tests is that a low risk score which you are within means that chemo is of no benefit and an intermediate score up to 32 means that the benefit is unclear.  Did the oncologist say what chemo you would have if you decided to go for it?  I was told I could have a short course of EC, only four cycles but that it was still a tough regime and not worth doing unless there was a clear benefit.  Also she said that even if I did have chemo the main benefit I would get long term would still be from the hormone tablets.   I think if there is any clear benefit from chemo they will tell you and urge you to have it.  Good luck with your decision.

Hi Rosal, feel for you. I am waiting on results of same test and debating all options too. Sorry I can’t say what is best way to go … I had decided if test comes back low not to go ahead but to go ahead if medium or higher… Your position is really hard… I’m trying to view it depending on how I would feel if I didn’t go ahead … Would I wonder what if too much ? Really feel for you and if I get any more info will certainly add it here. Thinking of you and sending big hug for Valentines Day xx Michelle

Thank you for your reply. My dr said I would have a course of Fec. I understand the results, but it’s the vascular invasive side of it that is making me head towards chemo,as it’s the uncertainty if any trace has gone into the bloodstream. So much to take in and understand. Everyone is so different in their choices. My surgeon was swaying to have chemo because of the vascular invasion. For peace of mind, it’s what I need to do. Thank you both. Let me know how you get on michelle.xx
