Significant swelling - appointment tomorrow.

Hi All,

Im after some advice if thats ok, im worried about a swelling i have and have made an appointment with the Dr tomorrow, i just dont know what to say or ask.

I first noticed it just before Christmas, i’d bought some new underwear and was trying the bras on at home and noticed that my left side looked a little bigger than the right. I didnt really think too much into it and got on with Christmas. Fast forward to now, the area between my armpit and my left breast is significantly swollen to the point where its very obvious even with my arm down. It doesnt hurt, its just uncomfortable when im wearing bras or a towel etc.

I’m 32 and dont have periods, i have the implant and havent had a period for around 12 months.

There is breast cancer in my family but not my immediate family, 2 of my nans sisters died from breast cancer, they were in 50’s and 60’s.

Any advice on what to say or ask would be really appreciated.

Thanks xx

Hi Shan,

What you’ve said says it all really, for the dr tomorrow. What usually happens is your dr should refer you to the breast clinic for full examination, if this happens, don’t worry as it is normal procedure. Mostly it turns out to be nothing serious.

Hello ShanTats32,

I found a lump in my left brest after getting a new bra. Its tight by the under wire and feels as though it suddenly appeared. I went to my gp and have been referred to a breast clinic. My appt is Thursday 2nd Feb. I am 34. I am trying to reassure myself that there are a number of things it could be.
Insist on a referral, it’s worth getting any lumps or swelling checked out.

Hi Archie34, thank you for replying. I’ve really been noticing it when I wear sports bras or even just a towel after a shower. I’ve just had a really good check and I have found a lump now. It’s a definite lump, so really scared now. My Dr’s appointment is tomorrow afternoon, tomorrow is going to be hell. I really hope everything goes ok at your breast clinic appointment hun xx

Welcome and I know that is not a place anyone of us would want to be, but you are in a lovely safe place where you will get lots of help and support.

Firstly both of you have done exactly the right thing by getting your lumps investigated, what you have to keep in mind is that most lumps turn out not to be cancerous but it is always worth getting them checked out for your own piece of mind.

Just keep talking to us and we will get you through these next few weeks until you get your answers.

Thanks ShanTats32. My appt is not till next Thursday. The waiting is difficult, just trying to distract myself with work.

I have found a lot of comfort in talking to my friend who is a gp. She said you can’t diagnose a lump simply by touch, it needs to be checked out by a specialist breast clinic. She was able to reassure me about the number of other things it could be. She said she does a number of referrals to breast clinics many turn out to be nothing sinister. She was much more helpful than my actual gp!!

I know ‘try not to worry’ is easier said than done, reassure yourself that you are being proactive and doing the right thing by getting it checked out. Hope all goes well tomorrow x
