Slow hair growth

Hello there ladies!
I posted some time ago about my hair…or rather lack of it! I finished chemo ( 3x FEC 3X Tax) at the end of March. My hair did not really grow at all for almost 3 months and then began sprouting a little. I know we are all different but I am feeling worried as so many of the posts I read are about people who find their hair grows back very quickly once it gets going. Mine is still very thin, patchy and fluffy and I still have to wear my wig. Is there anyone out there who has found that their hair took ages to grow back and was still wearing their wig 6months after treatment finished? I don’t know whether I am being impatient or whether it is a problem…
Thank you

Hi there

I finished chemo at the beg of January and ive still only got a couple of inches, it really is like watching grass grow, im so looking forward to taking my wig off and even thought about hair extensions but reading previous posts it seems that can damage the hair but i thought of that because im impatient. Im still having problems with my nails and the onc said that the chemo can stay in our bodies for a long time so maybe that also has an effect on hair growth.

take care

Haaaaa my fav subject! I am eighteen months after chemo and still wearing my wig.Never mind, my mamo and echo is due in 2 weeks so am full of dread and it brings everything back in to perspective.

oh god hope i dont have to wait that long. Pineapple how long is your hair??

I finished chemo mid September 06 and my hair was very slow to grow back, must have been 6 months at least before I was brave enough to ditch the wig, even then it was just spikey styled  It has however grown back thicker and a different texture. Pineapple is very unfortunate in being one of the very few people who’s hair hasn’t grown back at all :frowning:

mine has come back brown, ive always been a blonde, im gutted

hi yummymummy,

i always had very thin hair and got my onc to refer me to the dermatologist as i’d seen one years ago but never got anywhere, had some alopecia in the past and never properly recovered. he did a full investigation and sorted me out with some vit supplements and solution. now have rapidly growing hair (touch wood), thicker than its ever been and a bit curly!

i can’t say for sure if the dermatologist has sorted the problem, it could’ve been just slow chemo recovery followed by a spurt coincidentaly at the same time as derm treatment started, but i suspect so. also, as i had an underlying condition this all may not be relevant to you, but i guess my point is if you’re worried then ask for a referral . . you may have to wait, i waited a few months but was worth it in my case.
also, be patient! its not uncommon, and my nails are still really messed up and was told the same that it stays in the body for a long time and everyones recovery is different.

I’m glad yummymummy started this thread !

I finished chemo on 31st August, and every morning I race to the mirror to check if my hair is growing back. Hubby reckons it is, and I must admit my bonce is no longer like a boiled egg - and is starting to feel like fuzzy felt.

But where are my eyelashes ??? I wanted them back more than anything ! Going in for surgery tomorrow, and wanted to look at least half decent. My eldest daughter reckons I’ll look like that Alien Autopsy picture, when I’m on the operating table. Nice. She loves me really!

Looks like I’ve got to be patient then !

Love to all

hi julie,
i actually just posted a message about eyelashes! mine were SO SLOW coming back, but one started they soon got going - it will happen just wait a little longer. mine are now almost there, but still quite gappy, so made a post a few mins ago about the stuff i use called ‘great lash stuff for thise waiting for lashes’ or something like that.
like wearing falsie lashes, you need something there to work with, but is great for making the most of what you do have

p.s good luck with surgery, will be thinking of you!

Tracey - which hair? lol

pineapple, ha ha the horrible pubic looking hair thats growing on my head.

I would be very happy with some pubes on my head.lol

i finished chemo mid sept and have fluffy baby hair - my best friend says i look like a skin head !
Its growing back jet black which is interesting as previously i have always been a mousy brown.
Fingers crossed for curls!!

Thank you ladies for all your comments. I am thinking about asking for a referral or perhaps trying some of those vitamins in Boots recommended for hair and nail growth? Any one had any success with these? I know that in the grand scheme of things the hair situation should be the least of my worries but it does get me down.

I take the holland and barrett one’s and ive noticed that my nails are a little better but thats after about 2 months on them, hair still very slowly growing so not really sure if they do help, you can only try.
