Smoking!!

Was just wondering if a nine can advise on smoking and treatment etc. Not sure who smokes on here. I had quit new year for about the 5th time but after my diagnosis I started again… I was initially smoking around 10 a day but have cut them down to about 3 per day and hoping to be off them completely before surgery. My bcn nurse said they won’t do immediate implant with me being a smoker ( even though I told her I’d quit) I had for that one day. So my question really is why…? If I quit say a week before Surgery all the nicotine will be well out of my system so I don’t understand why. I feel like I’ve totally mucked things up now but with the stress off all this i Needed them. I don’t drink or anything else x

I think it is to do with healing after surgery, your skin heals better if you are not a smoker.

I had mx 2 weeks ago, not a smoker and wound is now a faint line, not scabby, healed well.

Good luck with your surgery, the stress after diagnosis is terrible.

Wow that’s great…did u have reconstruction too? X

No didn’t have reconstruction, just wanted the cancer out and I have small boobs so almost flat chested anyway. I have high blood pressure and couldn’t face a longer operation than 2 hrs for mx. I have the option to reconstruct at later date. My cancer is triple neg invasive ductal so I really wanted to get on with chemo asap to clear any rogue cells that may have escaped but on Mri and ultrasound the nodes looked clear.

So are u having to have chemo? Do they always give this with triple negative? Just my nodes have come back clear on ultrasound and waiting for mri to Check too. I’m praying I can avoid chemo. X

Yes they given you chemo with triple neg because it is usually aggressive cancer. Mine is stage 1 grade 3 invasive ductal, caught early. Seeing Consultant next week for node biopsy results.

Oh right i see. Well good luck xx

Media, smoking delays the healing of any wound. The oxygen needs to be able to flow through the blood vessels in order for that wound to heal. It takes 3 - 4 weeks for nicotine to leave our bodies.

Sorry Melia

I have been given champix to stop smoking any thoughts on them(I’m having single mx with recon on 3rd may then will find out about the rest of my plan I am worried about being a smoker and staying in hospital but I don’t think I will have given them up by then) xx

Champix are great if you can handle them. They made me feel nauseous for a cpl of hours every morning. I couldn’t handle it and stopped taking them after about a week. However, I know lots of people who didn’t have the side effects and have quit using them.
I can’t go straight in for recon because I’m a smoker. I plan on not smoking and using an e cig for 48 hours before my op on may 2.
Then, when all of my results are in and I can stop stressing about the unknown I plan on quiting altogether. Good luck. X

i gave up on day of diagnosis, i didnt smoke loads…i went to my chemist who will issue free patches is you go back weekly to do blow test…i have coped good on them…i am too scared with anaesthetic and healing as due bilateral mastectomy x
