Hi, can someone give me some advice please. I am 41 and have 3 children. Last Thursday I suddenly developed a burning pain in my left breast, which has not gone away. When I am premenstrual, I always get heavy aching breasts, but this is a completely different pain. I cannot feel a lump and am due for a routine mammogram on 22nd June. My mother died of breast cancer when she was 42 - I do not know what type of cancer she had, but her symptoms presented with a discharge from her nipple (which I do not have). Does anyone know what this could be? And should I see the doctor or just wait for my mammogram next month?
Thank you ![]()
Do you also have annual checkups with the breast unit…? (i used to because of family history) If you do i would give them a ring and explain what is happening… they might be able to bring forward your mammo appointment or see you in clinic… I was always told at my annual appointment to let them know if any changes happened…

Just to further explain - i was in a similar position two years… sudden change but i went to my gp and because i had an annual mammogram coming up he didn’t want to refer it to the hospital… and in my case in did turn out to be cancer…
Hi Hopscotch
This must be a worrying time for you-and if I were you I would go see your GP and get an earlier opinion than your June appt.
A similar thing happened to me-I went to my GP when I found a lump, even though I was due my 1st routine mamogram a few weeks later. My rationale was that if I went the ‘routine’ route, you would still have to wait for the results, but if you went thru GP, he could refer you direct to breast clinic-hopefully a one-stop-shop- where you would get your results more quickly.
Best of luck with what you decide, I found the waiting worse than the subsequent treatment.

Hi hopscotch
Welcome to the BCC forums, in addition to the valuable support you have here please do feel free to call our helpline on 0808 800 6000 which is open weekdays 9-5 and Sat 9-2 where you can talk through the concerns you currently have.
Best wishes
Lucy
Agree with all the other ladies Hopscotch and get a GP appointment. I am also 41 and was diagnosed in February, no family history and my first symptom was an itch under my nipple… any changes to your breast, even if they are not symptoms that you would associate with BC, you should get checked. Good luck
Thanks to you all for your kind replies. I have just been to see my GP and she is arranging for me to go to the one stop breast clinic - I will be seen within 2 weeks. Very worried, but thanks to you all for your advice - I will post when I get the appointment xx
Update - I received my appointment for the one stop breast clinic yesterday and it is for the 1st June. This seems so far away to me - is it usual to have to wait that long?
Thanks,
