sore face on chemotherapy treatment

Hi everyone, I am wondering if anyone has any advice about a very sore face after taxotere? I have had 3 FEC-T which despite the nausea which was mostly controlled (no sickness) I coped well with but have found taxotere much harder although the second one was better when my oncologist changed my GCSF injections to the one off one which made me a lot less sore, I was in so much pain with the one that you take over 5 days. I am now 10 days post 5th chemo and my face is sssssoooooo sore - its red and inflammed, my eyes are itchy and sore too but its my face thats really bothering me. I have tried aloe vera, vaseline, parafin wax which the GP gave me which helps to keep it hydrated but doesn’t help with soreness and itchiness. My hands and feet have burn like marks around the edges and in between my fingers, i think this is probably all to be expected but I’m finding it hard to cope with - that and the constipation followed by the opposite wasn’t great either!!! But atleast only one more to go and overall its all been manageable, much more than I had expected, any help gratefully received!!! love to you all xxxx

Oh you poor thing, those side effects sound awful for you. My face hurt too on tax and my skin was very dry , but not as bad as yours sounds. I described my face as feeling when of those play doh things where the play doh is pushed through the gaps. Well my face felt as though the flesh was being pushed through the bones, horrid. All I can say for that is painkillers painkillers painkillers. I washed with emolient to keep my skin hydrated and that worked. What about piriton or an anti histamine for the itchy face? How I can help uou is yo say my Chemo already feels like a bad dream that happened to someone else, and the last tax was only in august. Good luck, hang on in there, it will pass and you will look and feel more like yourself again soon.

Thank you so much for that advice, I have been sitting here smothering my face in liquid parafin and am now off to take 2 paracetomol and a piriton!!! To think I used to worry about taking an aspirin and now I am full of stuff - all which is working wonderfully well!!! I am so thrilled you feel good after all your chemo finished, It is a long haul and this time it feels like this chemo will go straight into the next. I am finding it a bit harder this time to keep my mind on the straight and narrow, although I think the best you can do is to let out all the feelings and thoughts that you have. I think may be tax makes me a bit down. Did you go on to have radiotherapy and if so how did that go? Hope you are doing well and thank you so much for reaching out with your advice xx

Oh my god, it sounds awful. I’m waiting to start Tax and dreading it, especially as I seem to have some of the Tax SEs on AC: sore fingernails, peeling skin, sore eyes, very sensitive face - but not as bad as you describe.

I discussed SEs of Tax with the chemo-nurse as he was giving me the AC through a syringe and he said that sore skin/nails/tingling should be reported as it might lead to giving a slightly lower dose. I guess your onc has decided you’re on the right dose though if s/he is already on the ball with SEs?

Good luck with the next 3 and I really hope they are bearable. It’s grim but thank god it doesn’t last forever. It’s more than 5 weeks since my last AC and I’m finally feeling a lot better. xxxx

The Body Shops Hemp Hand cream worked brilliantly for my face, at times it was just so dry.

I think I may have cracked it! Keeping up with paracetomol and piriton plus the parafin wax applied thickly and massaged in after about 30 minutes of cold compresses on my face. Its feeling better today. I slept in moisturising white gloves with my hands smothered in the cream.Lots of people have told me that the side effects with one drug don’t necessary occur with others and I have certainly found this. The FEC T for me was relatively easy and tax is manageable so if you’re about to start it really don’t worry love to all xxxx

Hi woodlandmanor i used to get a bit puffy and itchy eyes and my oncologist also suggested anti-histamine for a few days untill it setled and it worked for me since starting treatment i have always washed with aqueous cream even body and underarms you can put it in the bath too and it makes your skin feel lovely ( didnt use any perfumed products during treatment) except alluminium free deoderant Biosen( but not under effected arm when having radiotherapy).Hope this works for you xx Julie
