I had lumpectomy with mammoplasty and sentinel node biopsy in June and then re-excision to clear margins in July. I am just wondering how long tenderness should last really? My boob is still quite tender and even sore at times. Healing was fine and I have full arm movement back etc but according to NHS guidance I shouldn’t have any pain or tenderness left at all now. Is this right? Was just wondering if anyone else has some residual tenderness after four months?
I had tenderness for years after my lumpectomy and still have some discomfort when having mammograms now (9 years on ) - I don’t think it’s unusual to have some soreness for quite a while after surgery .I did also have 15 sessions of radiotherapy which could have impacted too.
My friend still has discomfort off and on and she’s 10 years post - op . I’m 2.5 years post- op lumpectomy and SNB and still get intermittent discomfort both in my breast and my armpit - though that responds to the post-op exercises . Sorry to tell you this . However I’ve found that the bouts of discomfort are far less frequent than a year ago xx
Hi sharlou, I had lumpectomy and lymph nodes biopsy 1.5 years ago. My lumpectomy wound had no pain or tenderness at all. It was the lymph node wound that was painful for quite a while. Even now, I can still get pain and tenderness especially if I do heavy lifting. I was going to mention this to my nurse when I go for follow up in april, but I feel quite reassured now by reading other replies that this seems to be normal. Good to know I am not the only one.
Best wishes with the rest of your treatment and hope it settles down a bit xx
I had a lumpectomy and sentinel lymph node biopsy in December 2020 followed by radiotherapy in my left breast. I still get some pain but it is not as bad as it once was.
I’m 13 months from surgery Oct 2023 central wide excision & 21 lymph nodes removed (1 stopped the breast cancer & the other 20 had Chronic Lymphatic Leukaemia)… Had 20 radiotherapy sessions ending Feb 2024.
Again excision/lumpectomy recovery good: big issues with shoulder / arm pain, aches, tingling, numbness….taking pain killers a lot, physio and massage.
I see an Osteopath from time - she’s my first port of call if I get an injury . I fell over 3 weeks after breast surgery and damaged my rotator cuff in my " good" side and I’ve also got a chronic neck / shoulder problem from previous injuries so every so often I go when they flare up . It’s thanks to her that I was able to get my arms in the proper position for radiotherapy and though I also found Physio exercises helpful she always manages to effect some improvement after a couple of treatments so that may be worth a try . Sorry that you’re struggling . X x
