Staging CT scan

Hi would an initial staging ct scan show any issues in an uneffected breast?
I had a recurrence in my left but although the consultant asked for a mammogram in my right. The radiographer said it wasnt necessary as id had a screening one the year before.
I cant rest easy knowing my right wasnt checked but if the staging ct didnt pick anything up(it came back clear) does this mean a mammogram wasnt necessary anyway?

Hi Suzy,

Thank you for posting. It is understandable that you have concerns about your right breast especially after experiencing a recurrence in your left breast.

If a local recurrence is found in one breast it is usual practice to assess and scan both breasts. The most accurate scan for examining a breast is a mammogram. This is designed to look specifically at breast tissue. Sometimes a breast ultrasound or MRI scan will also be recommended as part of the assessment.

A CT scan is type of scan that looks at the inside of your body. It can sometimes detect incidental changes in the breast but is not the most sensitive scan used to assess breast tissue.

It is important to talk to your breast care nurse or treatment team about your concerns and ask them to explain again the reasons why a mammogram of your right breast was not required.
