I’ve been diagnosed with breast cancer in Septembre, I’m on tamoxifen now and my fisrt radhiotherapy appointment will be due 8th of January.
I’m just wondering who plans the treatment, is it the oncologist or the consultant, cause I’ve been told by consultant that I’ll have the radiotherapy but he hasn’t mencioned the chemo
You should see a Consultant who deals with radiotherapy, then you are given an appointment for the treatment simulator so they can measure everything properly. They will also put small pinprick tattos on your skin so everything lines up properly at each session. I had 25 sessions and had my skin examined by the Senior Radiographer every week, I saw another Consultant prior to the treatment finishing as an area had to be measured up for the 5 “boost” sessions I was given onto my lumpectomy scar.
I had my radiotherapy in the middle of the 2 lots of chemo treatment I was given.
Hi Ana,
I was told by my surgeon consultant in Sept. I would require a WLE, Tamoxifen and radiotherapy. Once the operation had been done I was passed on to my oncologist. My onc explained the process of the rads, I had 15 + 3 booster, the last one was on 3rd Dec. Onc was also present at my planning session to measure and mark my skin with the tiny tattoos (size of pin head). I was always asked if everything was ok by the rad nurses and the onc was available to discuss any concerns each Monday. It’s almost a month since I finished rads and my skin is pretty much back to normal, had some sore spots but nothing serious. Make sure you start putting the aqueous cream on now it will help with scars and the drying effect of the rads.
I was not offered chemo and do sometimes wonder why some people who have the op I had are given it and some not.
I have a follow up app in Jan and hopefully that’s it until mammogram in Oct.
Hope this helps a little.

I started my radiotheraty on 29th Dec and it is not as bad as I feared. As Caz advised start putting on the cream as soon as poss and dont be afraid to ask questions. I am having my treatment in Portsmouth and they are all lovely. Skin is holding up well. I was “handed over” to my Onc after my second op and can ask to see her if I have any worries.
Happiness to you for 2008
best wishes
Hilary
