Hi Ladies,

I had my operation in January and finished my Rads in May I too am still having trouble with pain in my breast when I lay on it or raise my arm above my head. My Onc says its the operation too.
I am having my first mammogram after my operation in November then seeing my Surgeon in December, so I’m keeping everything crossed till then.

My surgery was 4 years ago and I had rads in spring 2007. I still experience pain where the lump was removed, also occasionally under the arm. Sometimes I get nervy pain in my upper arm as well. It’s just in the background and I think it probably goes on for years to come.

i still have an ache in my left boob and its 4 years now since i had rads on that side

more recently had rads in feb on the right side and its gets some pain but not as bad as the left.

but the pain isnt as bad as the ITCH!!! which has been driving me potty for 4 years.

what do you do with an itch? you scratcvh it… then that makes it sore… its a bugger LOL.

get sharp shooting pains every now and then like needles going through my boobs intermittently too.

Lx

Lulu, I am so glad somebody else this far down the line mentioned having an itch. I thought it may just have been me and I was going doolally! It’s worse if I wear a bra with lace on it for any length of time.

i know there is nothing they can do about the itch either but it really does drive me quite mental sometimes… its only my ‘old’ boob that has the itch the recent one doesnt seem to be affected in the same way.

i try not to wear a bra as they just feel bloody uncomfy but have to wear one to work and my hand is always in there having a good old scratch lol

i had my wle surgeries Sept and Oct last year. Rads March-April this year. My breast is still sore. I had a chat to my bcn and she siad that my breast is settling down to a ‘new normal’

Dear all
This is my first post and the first time I have been able to face reading anything to do with breast cancer. I am 8 days post wide local excision and reconstruction surgery . As I write this I am laid on my bed bare breasted very sore, especially under my arm sentinel node biopsy scar. All wounds healing well surgeon did fantastic job but I am so sore. Problem finding the right bra to put on that will not irritate wounds was wearing a sports bra okay when dressings on now so sensitive.

I know i have not quite accepted or let it sink in this is happening to me. The menal anguish waiting for results then surgery is awful. I see the surgeon wed 8th sept for results of sentinel node biopsy already know I will need radiotherapy dependent on results chemo. If I could just have a good cry think I will feel better get leaky eyes but seem to hold myself back.

Would appreciate any tips on easing soreness please.

Also is it normal to feel shaky and tired?

maggie

Hi Maggie,

It’s still early days for you with all this, so I think how you are feeling is pretty normal. It took me ages to get over the after effects of having things like anaesthetic in hospital adn I was tired for weeks afterwards. Perhaps a little light arm stretching would help alleviate any soreness - I used to take 2 paracetamol 15 minutes prior to doing this every day, just to take the edge off any discomfort. If you have been assigned to a breast care nurse, it might also be an idea to speak to her just to put your mind at rest a bit over how you are currently feeling. You can also use the services on here - when I was first diagnosed I used the email service a couple of times and found the replies I got back very useful as they pointed me in the right direction on what I should be asking about my treatment etc.

Last but not least, don’t be a stranger to the board as it’s here for support. We all have different stories but they are all bound together by this disease, so you will find it invaluable.

Hi All
Taken advice re paracetamol and exercise. I am feeling slightly better still sore but not in as much discomfort as when I first posted. Finding this website very useful reading past posts on the forum don’t feel so isolated… Interesting to read other women’s posts at different stages of the journey.
Managed to have a good cry last night instigated by spilling a cup of tea on my bed sheet!!! Hope this does not happen too often cost me a fortune in washing powder and tissues. Do feel much better getting some of this pent up emotion out. It is not nice us all having to suffer this terrible disease.

Hi Maggie

I had 2x WLE and SNB a year ago, and the first surgery created a haematoma so I had one boob the size of Jordans! I found that wearing a bra (I had to go out and by large size soft sports bras) really helped as it stopped it moving around too much. I wore this night and day for a couple of weeks - the surgeon suggested it and he was right. The SNB scar was painful for ages and I had difficulty in getting a bra where the strap didn’t rub on the scar, I used to wear a dressing there to protect it a bit. A year on and I’ve had to throw out all my old bras and get new ones to cope with the new sizes of my breast (they’ve gone from a C to DD - don’t ask me how that happened when I had a chunk cut out of one of them, must be the tamoxifen) and to avoid rubbing the scar.

I still have a sore breast, my radiologist did an ultrasound as part of my one year check up and said that it’s a combination of scar tissue and lumpy breast tissue and will probably hurt for many years. It’s not bad, and generally doesn’t cause me a problem unless I poke it (so I try not to!). I have full arm movement and only notice the discomfort when I try to throw something. Just as well I’m not a cricket player!

Hope it improves soon

Helen

I wore soft sports bras in bed for a while to stop things moving around (Matalan are good for very cheap ones). When I was having radiotherapy they told me to stop wearing a bra after about 10 sessions, so I found some very soft secret support vests. I still have them and wear them in bed in hot weather if I feel a bit sore. Sometime it’s like a heavy feeling.
