STOPPING ARIMIDEX

I feel guilty for troubling you all as I know I am lucky to be seven years in from diagnosis of grade 3 stage 3 cancer.  I have been taking Arimidex with NO side effects whatsoever and now my surgeon has stopped me.  I am aware of the risk of bone fractures but have not been troubled with this and the webpages I have been onto seem to intimate that when Arimidex is stopped as there is a sudden surge of oestrogen the protection against further breast cancer stops with it.

He isn’t an easy man to talk to and I feel I am left floundering.  He says there is no increased risk but that contradicts everything I have read. My partner is in agreement with me but we don’t know who to turn to.

Has anyone stopped taking Arimidex and does  anyone know whether I am at higher risk of breast cancer if I stop?

I recently moved down South and don’t know who to ask.  Thank you for your time.

Coco - I am 10 years post diagnosis and at my most recent review my oncologist suggested I continued with Arimidex , particularly since I had node positive disease. As far as I know there is very little research into the benefits or otherwise of long term Arimidex but ,for me, it is my small crutch. I haven’t had any particular problems so I’m happy to continue. If you want to continue ,have the conversation with your onc . I know a lot of them don’t like it if you challenge their treatment plans but it is supposed to be collaborative care and it is YOUR life after all.
