Storm Riders/A Town Called Determination

Hi

I noticed you mentioned Bury St.Edmunds in the first posting. I am a BSE girl though sadly no longer live there but all my family still do(moved away for love…) so just wanted to say Hi

Gina

Hi Gina

It’s me that lives in Bury. Well, a village about 8 miles out to the south. Which bit are you from? My DH grew up around here, but I’m from Staffordshire originally we moved here 7 years ago. I moved here for love and you moved away lol.

Morning everyone…

And welcome Rose…

I used to read all the Anne Rice vampire books - although my favourits were her witch ones  I was so upset when Hurricane Katrina was going for New Orleans as I really feel as though I know the place - alot of the books are based there in the garden district etc…

Mornin’ all and Hi Theresa

I guess we know which two of us will be up in the bunkhouse making coffee and getting the fire going!!!

Welcome Rose from my alter Bilbo, feel like saddling up today and riding the range, I’ve deffo got cabin fever.

I was itching to get out of the house last night after 11 days as prisoner so walked to my brothers for some games on his Wii, great fun especially when people get competitive, it was hilarious. Suffering for it a bit this morning as my bad arm doesn’t want to move at all now but hey.

Nearly there Sal…brilliant. Hope the chemo babes are managing, are you working from home today Gen, don’t go rushing back too soon. Hugs to all, Di xxx

P.S. Love The Rose too, My Wish by Rascall Flatts has lovely words, very Country but can’t help singing the chorus out loud even if I am tone deaf

Howdie y’all

Mind if i hitch a ride along the way? My pal Mary says you’re a good bunch of fellows to keep a stranger in good cheer.

Been travelling this way since January spending time here and there along the way. Met some mighty fine people and spent some great nights whiling away the time. Some of you have met me before in other towns, hope i didnt embarass you, that steroid juice makes me a bit loud.

Picked up a few wrong uns too, Sludge gob currently laying into me. Cant eat my baked beans or drink my Sasparella. I have seen off the last of those chemo raiders though and am heading into radsville.

Dont know what to expect when i get there. Seeing ‘the wise ones’ next week and they’ll tell me how long i should park my horse for. Planning on topping up my tan a bit.

Anyway, howdee from a stranger in town.

Linda

Morning all, and welcome Rose and Linda. Welcome, Gina, are you going to hang around for a bit too? As Carole said, there’s plenty of room!

Hope you had a good night’s sleep, Helen & Gennie, in particular. Ros, thinking of you with the CMF tomorrow. And hugs to all those feeling fragile today.

Looking forward to the next installment, Carole!

Have a good day everyone.

Hey there new Riders! What’s your alter ego name then Linda, and horse, and Storm Dog? There’s still space in the bunkhouse so sling your packs in there then head over to the Old One’s kitchen for coffee and pancakes. Horses are out in the fields, and the Storm Dogs are hanging around somewhere. Just let yours away and he/she will catch up with them wherever they are.

Which reminds me, Rose, horse name from you too and you don’t have to adopt a storm dog or cat but if you want one fire up a name for him or her too.

Hi Gina, hang out. Plenty of room in Determination for another rider.

Talking of storm dogs, my biggy snores like a trooper!

Anne Rice, that was the name. Yes I read all her vampire and witches books. Haven’t read them for yonks. I was totally in lust with Lestat, but in the film obviously I had to go for Brad Pitt!

Gen, if you want to try vampire books then that’s the author I’d go for. She’s not aiming at teens. What am I reading just now? Boris Johnston’s “Have I got views for you”, just started Ian McEwan’s “Saturday”, Mdme Dariaux’s “Elegance” is always open along with a pile of style books and the V&A’s “The Golden Age of Couture”. Working my way through a pile I’ve got next to my bed. When I’ve finished McEwan, Jack Kerouac’s “On the Road” is the next one. Ah Medieval whodunnits, I haven’t read one of them for ages. In fact I haven’t read for ages. I used to be a book fiend, but it’s all slumped over the years. I’m just getting back into it now. I have a particular liking for fantasy (not sci fi). Tad Williams, Robin Hobb, Stephen Donaldson, three of my favourite authors along with Anne Rice. Been reading them since my 20s.

Chuckle! You’ll also all find out how much more like Steel I am, despite all the talk of style books and Manolo’s. I have a dream…

Ros - easy goes it for this round remember. And if you feel the clouds gathering, it’s the chemo, not you. I’m definitely ok now.

Welcome all newcomers. Rose, you’re not alone in the “caught it early” group. My bc was found during my first routine mammo and I couldn’t feel mine either. I’ve managed to avoid the dreaded chemo, as have a few other Storm Riders. As Lizzie said, you may have the less sh*tty end of the sh*tty stick, but it’s still a sh*tty stick! That just about sums it up really. When I went for surgery, I loaded Riders on the Storm onto my ipod and played that while I was waiting. We’ll be with you every inch of the way.

Linda, I finish 3 weeks of rads tomorrow and it’s been pretty easy. I feel a bit sore now, but the worst thing is running the gauntlet of the traffic every day to get to the hospital! Planning appointment is a bit strange - lots of being drawn on with felt pen, radiographers batting numbers across you like some sort of wierd language etc.

I’m reading The Kite Runner at the moment - seems pretty good so far. I’ve recently read The Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell, which was different, but good. One of my favourites is The Time Traveller’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. Other favourites, Thomas Hardy, Lord of the Rings, George Eliott. Don’t think I’ve ever read a vampire book…

Morning all…great to see new stormriders in Determination. Welcome Linda and Rose…you might find you want to stay Gina…welcome!

Ros hope your 2nd cycle goes ok. Not too many SE…or at least doable!
Same to all you chemo babes…who are recovering from hangovers…enjoy this bit of your cycles…in prep for the next one!
Sal only one more …fandabbydozy!!!

The genre of books I read now, only started a couple or so years ago…have had and still got hundreds of books…and been through lots of different genres since I was old enough to read the ‘better’ stuff.
Reading is my passion too…for me its escapism, thats why I prefer to read stuff that is about different worlds, fantasy, futuristic, and now witches, vampires, sorcerers, etc. As you can see apart from poetry books and art books…I’m not really into contemporary books!

I loved the dragons in the ‘Pern’ series…Anne Mcaffrey
I loved the magical people in the ‘Shannara’ series…Terry Brooks
Barbera Erskine is a terrific writer and her books are one offs that take you back in time through history…or they are about ghosts.

The most recent series are by Kelley Armstrong…wiches, werewolves etc… but wrote in a very believable way…well if you have my mind heheheehehe As you can see I like to get sets of books, because you can revisit characters that you enjoy! But there is room for one offs! I’m not so keen on contemporary books…and my friends unundated me with them…but I haven’t read them…sigh…
Sorry for the waffle…but love books!!

Woke up early hours…all my body aching…but 2 paracetamols put that right and slept in till 10! dirty stop in eh!!
Just crossed Sal…yep love Lord of the Rings too!

Helenx

Hey welcome to the newbies, hope all being “interfered” with are up and at em and looking at the finishing post being a step closer…

Mmmm books, love them too, but just dont seem to sit down as much and enjoy as much as I used to, don’t seem to have the time ! However, in the past couple of months have read the autobiographies of Clarissa Dickson-Wright and Alan Titchmarsh, also a Michael Connolly thriller, and the 44 Scotland Street series and a book called The Diary of a Demented Housewife… and snap Sal , have just started The Kite Runner, so I’ve got a bit of a mixed taste, just whatever takes my fancy.

Im thinking of trying out a new venture of doing a weekly cake stall at carboot sales to start with, then maybe onto the market ,so am picking out my best recipes and costing them out and doing a lot of baking this week, it’s the battle of the gingerbread today ! Traditional dark and sticky verus light and not so strong tasting… will keep you posted…

Howdy

Sludge gob still giving me jip, just eaten a small bowl of foul tasting rice. Easy to get down though. I cant wait till this phase passes then its just overactive eyes and nose and i am on the home pass.

Trying to think of a good alter ego ‘the booby’’ springs to mind, Horse - lucky legs - lucky they dont snap under my weight LOL and dog well i have a dog - Rosie but better name is diamonds, cos thats what i need to keep her. (you might have read my posting where she got ill and cost me a fortune)

I havent been reading lately apart from newspapers and gossip mags. Being a teacher, used to read a lot of children’s books particularly Michael Morpurgo who is worth a look at anyway. Kensuke’s Kingdom is a brilliant read. I am blaming chemo brain for my enjoyment of matters trivial at the moment.

Glad to hear you have not suffered too much on rads Salopets. i have splurged on the radiance cream from bristol center in anticipation as there were a lot of recommendations for it. I have to travel by tube to London (live in West Essex) to Barts and i live near station so that part wont be too hard, unless, of course, there is a tube strike but that couldnt happen, could it???

Anyway, debating trying a bit of ice cream.
See you later
Linda

Welcome Linda, good to have you along for the ride.

I woke up at 8 this morning, had breakfast, went back to sleep and finally dragged myself out of my pit at 11.30. What a lazybones, but I was SO tired. Still feel as if I could sleep some more, so am taking it steady on the working from home today i.e. not done any yet.

Blow it, I’ve had a rough ride this cycle and I reckon it’s more important to get myself in shape for the next blast next week than faff about with work.

Right, lunch.

Too right Gen, get yourself sorted out before even thinking about any work. Do you fancy a slice of soft squishy sticky dark gingerbread mmmmmm the smell of it…beats the light one hands down im my opinion, my prob will be leaving it alone so I can ask everyone elses opinion… hmm wonder if anyone has ever eaten a whole gingerbread in an afternoon…

Sandra x

Gen - i think i’ve said before - i had 8 cycles of chemo and by time i had got to cycle 6 i used to find i would have one day each cycle where i literally slept 20 hours of the 24… would just get up for an hour or so - but then sleep another 8…

Gen, sleep, sleep, and then rest up. You are way more important than any work. I think this CMF is going to be really tiring, so start pacing yourself. The Accountant might be doing his dastardly business in Determination, but Riviera is right on his tail, and as soon as she catches him red handed he is gonna get it! So shove that work to the side, eat a healthy and nutritious lunch topped off with some excellent gingerbread, then put your boots up.

Scotia is definitely the baker in the midst then. Is your car boot stand the start of a business future Sandra? Sounds great. I adore gingerbread, with raisins in too. I can smell your kitchen from here. Heaven!

Booby, Lucky, and Diamonds. Good names! Missed your doggie posting Linda, but I know the feeling. My big dog is having a couple of years of on-going leg problems. The insurance paid then decided to do that thing insurance companies do and just decide they’ve had enough of paying, using a rather dubious loophole in the vets’ claim to do so. So I’m forking out loadsadosh and I mean loads. Can’t not. I’ll sell myself before I let her suffer. Thankfully the vet is being amazing about letting me pay it up gradually. Op in two weeks which is hopefully going to prove that the latest limp is a torn cartilage. That we can sort, and with a bit of luck she’ll be pain free at last. Poor poochy, but she’s a Storm Dog and just gets on with it.

Aww poor puppy. And grr at the insurance people, funny how they always manage to find a way of not giving you what you’ve paid for in good faith isn’t it?

Does a bag of bombay mix count as healthy and nutritious? I’ve just wolfed one down. Then I might have some chocolate. Rather than work I am listening to the new Green Day album (arrived today, very good if you like that kind of thing) and reading my book. In fact, re-reading, it’s a set of books by Diana Gabaldon that I read a few years ago and loved so I’m giving it another whirl. The medieval murder mystery didn’t grab me, so I’ll save that for another time.

Mmmmmm all I need now is some lovely warm gingerbread and a cup of coffee.

Well it’s crunchy. And fresh veg is crunchy, so there’s a similarity. And it’s got raisins in, and some lentils. And chocolate is full of antioxidants I think. In fact it’s a completely balanced meal!

I’ve reaallly got to do some work but I’m just not in the mood at all. Think I’ll go do some weeding instead. If what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger, then I guess what we can procrastinate about might just make us momentarily smiley!

Oh, Sal, thanks again for that article. I just met a lady yesterday through Ebay (bought something from her) whose husband has cancer. I passed it on to her and it’s a huge help. Amazing how we make connections!

Meant to say, ice cream, good idea! The CMF has turned my taste to ash, but sweet stuff gets through, and ice cream does the sweet trick and sooths the mouth. Barrage balloon syndrome is unlikely to disappear fast.

That’s the attitude Gen, sod the work, get some rest. I haven’t had Bombay mix for ages (or should it be Mumbai Mix now?) Trouble is, you can’t just eat one handful can you?

Sandra, you’ve made me want cake now! Definitely the dark sticky one - mmmmmmmm. I’ve just bought myself a large bar of Green & Black’s ginger as a treat for finishing rads tomorrow. I wonder if it will last till then?

I’ve just read 44 Scotland St. Have you read the Number 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency? Oh, and another favourite is Wilkie Collins’s The Woman in White.

I’ve passed that article onto someone else as well today Carole. She’s just finished chemo and was expecting to feel great, but she’s feeling really bad. It seems to get us all at some stage.

No 1, I knew there was something. Listened to it on the Radio and I think it’s being televised now. Off to Amazon I go to get a copy. Thanks for the reminder!

I’m sure Bombay Mix is healthy, Gennie! I rather like the sound of Sandra’s gingerbread …

Just one more to go, Sal and it sounds like your skin is holding up well.

I’ve just finished re-reading the Sarah Caudwell legal whodunits and am about to start John Hatcher’s book on the Black Death, which should be interesting because of the way it tells the story from the perspectives of some characters who lived through it. Last year I read an historical novel that really played fast and loose with real characters, with people turning up after they’d been dead for years and I thoroughly disliked it, but the Hatcher looks well researched. I’m also dipping into a series of art books looking at medieval painting for a paper I have to produce in the alarmingly near future!. And I re-read Thomas Hardy and LoTR from time to time.

Hope you’ve been able to rest today, Gennie, and that you’re okay, Ros.
