I’ve posted on this subject before, but it was a while ago…
I’m very happy to say, I’ve just been offered a fabulous job in location we love and we are looking forward now to relocating (if the plumbers ever come back and finish the bathroom, so we can put the house on the market!!) but the offer is conditional on medical…I did fill in all their paperwork and on that put in the BC and tamoxifen…it was in a sealed envelope only to be opened by their Occupational Health people if there was an offer.
I can’t imagine a circumstance where they would be able to withdraw the offer without me being able to take them to a tribunal (I’d rather have the job!!) - I guess it’s just the phrase conditional subject to… it makes you nervous and I’m just looking for reassurance??
the medical information in the sealed envelope is confidential to the Occupational Helath team. They may get back to you and ask further questions. I am sure that you should be OK. If not then yes you would have a clear case for discrimination under the Disability Discrimination Act.
I think its very very unlikely your new employers would dream of withdrawing the job offer. Loads of women have had breast cancer and are on tamoxifen.
I was offered a job after I was diagnosed and had been treated with tamoxifen etc, and had a very brief discussion with a nurse over the phone about my treatment, still there five years later
I work in HR and we work closely with occupational health, although we don’t ever see occupational health forms. The occupational health nurse or doctor will probably want to talk to you, in order to see whether there are any reasonable adjustments that need to be made for you to help you to carry out the job. Ultimately it depends exactly what you need to be able to do in this job, but I would have thought that it is very unlikely that there will be any reason for them to withdraw your job offer.
So, had my medical yesterday…had drug test!! (don’t ask, but I passed that), eye test, chat about the treatment - check ups, tamoxifen, mammograms, passed as FIT! The nurse confirmed all the information would stay within Occupational Health and would not be available for bosses, colleagues etc…which I knew really…
Off to the Lakes we go tra la!!
If so kudos on the job and I really hope you’re as happy here as me and the OH are. Oh yeah, be braced for winter they reckon we’ve got a good proper cold one coming and up here that means lots of snow

Yes we did relocate about 4 years ago from Brighton. 9 hour drive in the rain all the way, don’t regret it at all.
We’re based in Askham, just south of Penrith so just on the edge of the national park. We can literally walk out the door turn left and up the road to a most gorgeous view of Ullswater, turn right to go down to the lowther river, 3 miles down the road to haweswater. Nothing’s more than 30 mins away apart from the deepest part of the mountains which we prefer to walk into anyway
we’re going to be further south…haven’t determined exactly where yet, but within 30 miles of Barrow…we’re up in a couple of weeks going house hunting…could do Kendal, Millom…might have a look at Far Sawrey…probably won’t be able to afford there…
the northern end is our favourite spot as well, but don’t care I envy your view - hope we get something like…
Kendal’s a bit popular with arty types and therefor expensive, Don’t know the barrow area that well sadly but I do know that you need to be a bit careful about places near sellafield… enough said
I lived in Windermere when I was a child for 10 years - went to the local school. It is a lovely place to live, but a bit remote in the winter. Far Sawrey is absolutely wonderful, (The Sawrey Inn is lovely for a meal) but again getting anywhere is a bit of a problem because you either have to go around the lake Hawkshead way or get the little ferry across to Bowness. In the summer it is manic with tourists (Beatrix Potter etc) and the road gets bad in winter. Kendal is nice and has good access to M6 etc. but like Angie said, prices are high. I envy you going there as the scenery is so spectacular. Where abouts is your job based?
My family came from Great Strickland and Whale in the 18th c and some lived in Scotland as well, Rigg near Gretna Green. I loved Askham, they lived there at a forge at one time
Oh wow Mole, small world isn’t it. certainly around here. We’re right in the heart of the village but due to this old cottage being so damp have to move soon, whale was the plan actually as we feel it’s just too much of a metropolis around here LOL.

I’m to be based (jobwise) in Barrow in Furness…I reckon I can commute about 30miles each way max, (without going mad!) so that’s our search circle…we’d like to have a mountain view if we can, but are happy just to be less than 6 hours away!! We used to holiday in Far Sawrey, just up the road from the Inn, I was one of the tourists! used to tut at all the coachloads of Japanese at Near Sawrey tho’
I suspect ‘the Sawrey’s’ is a bit of a pipe dream and we’ll end up in the peninsula somewhere - but there again, I always thought living in Cumbria was a pipe dream as well!! So if we only have to go 30 minutes up the road for a dream view and a lake for the dogs then what the heck!!
Ulverston is nice and if you wanted something more in the sticks, Newby Bridge and those little villages along the A590 are nice and right on the lake with reasonable roads to Barrow. The main A roads are usually kept clear of snow in the winter and you would have access to the M6. The house prices shouldnt be as bad around that area. I keep looking at properties in Windermere and can’t believe how high they are - they actually seem to be holding their prices well, too as the Lakes will always be popular. I know what you mean, having the beautiful scenery on your doorstep, especially with dogs. What I would give for that now, yet when I was a teenager, I hated the mountains etc and longed for nightclubs and clothes shops!!! What a lovely turn up for you!

I know re the teenage thing…I was brought up in a village (ish) couldn’t WAIT to get away, now for the past 20 years we have lived in a lovely North Oxfordshire Village and I’ve envied those that have lived there all their lives and have such roots…it’s an age thing
The love of the Lake District comes from my husband, before I met him I hadn’t even been there…we were always Cornwall for our holidays (14hour traffic jams before the motorway was built, when the whole world hit the road on the first day of the factory fortnight :)) . The first time we went there (to the Lakes) together I was just blown away…it’ll be hard leaving behind family and friends - but I guess they’ll all come and stay…my sister has still never been there, I’m looking forward to showing it to her…
Oh you bet they’ll come and stay, if it’s anything like our place you’ll have a booking rota every summer. We had to refuse people this year due to me doing chemo but they’ll be back next summer
We came on holiday here 4 years ago, went home to brighton and moved 6 weeks later. Best thing we ever did
Oh my gosh, now that’s what I call decision making!! We’ve been talking about it off and on for about 4years…and I reckon we’d still be just talking were it not for BC…sod it thought I, I ain’t hanging around any longer - mind you it still took me nigh on a year to find the right job…
I do like having people to stay…doesn’t happen that frequently here, have to see how long it takes me to get sick of it! LOL
