Suggestions for a new hobby please

Hi,

My current hobbies are- Ballet, streetdance, skateboarding, sailing, surfing, mountainboarding, climbing and anything else generally dangerous and fun.
Now I’ve had my lumpectomy etc I can’t do these things for a bit so need something other than day time TV to fill my time. I started playing online scrabble last night but the person I was playing against started asking me questions about my sex life! I called him a perverted weirdo and promptly signed off.
So I would love any suggestions please.

Thanks
Fairyem

I love card making and scrapbooking… I’ve been scrapbooking for 4 years and cardmaking for a couple of years longer than that…

I know a lot of ladies in the secondaries part of the site have done things like memory boxes for their children etc…

here is a link to some more details about scrapping…

Good thinking thanks,
This is going to sound really stupid but what is scrapbooking exactly, I mean what do you put in the books?
Fairyem.

Hi Fairyem

What an interesting post.

We’re all different, of course, but here’s a couple of ‘ideas’ (not terribly original, I’m afraid)

Jigsaw puzzles - very soothing. Amazon have a good selection.

How about an Open University course? There are plenty of short ones if you just want to dip a toe in first and they start all year round. (open.ac.uk)

With the scrapbooking it is really whatever you want to do… If you look at my profile there is a link to my blog where you can see some of the stuff i have done… must admit i havn’t done anywhere near as much the last year or so but planning on getting into it more again… I mainly do pages on my family - but people also do it on their travels, interests etc and minibooks are really popular as well as the traditional albums… if you have a look at the gallery section of the link i put there are all sorts of different sections…

i first got into cardmaking about this time 7 seven years by making my own christmas cards and that is quite a nice way to get into it and see if you like crafting…

Oooooh reading… I have got sooooooooo many books I want to read, both modern and classics.
I love baking and cooking though so that keeps me busy as does my garden, and now planting up pots with spring bulbs.

When i was recovering I borrowed my daughters ds lite and whiled away a good few hours on various games and brain training.

How about becoming a whizz with computer skills or something like digital photograhy ? My brother has just done a huge family history chart so saved me from having to do one… Good luck !

Hi

As well as scrapbooking and card making like Theresa, I have also become quite hooked on Sudoku and Killer Sudoku they certainly give your brain a workout

Andie

I bought a doll’s house in kit form - very therapeutic, can dip in and out whenever I like, sit on the sofa making things to put in it, friends can help as well when they visit. Had to give up the reading and cross-stitch as chemo affecting eyes.

I’m doing an advanced certificate in copywriting in my spare time as I hope to freelance soon. As a project I’m collecting things together for a food website so I can learn more about web design stuff.

I also make knitted hats in my spare time and am thinking of opening a shop on the internet, just as a bit of hobby fun.

Hi
I started selling items on ebay…just for fun and to see whether i could buy and sell and make a profit…before you ask not much money made. I still do it and that is 5 years on. You do meet some odd people but also some really nice people too.
Painting, arty stuff, knitting sewing. I have been through all of theses too. Still paint when i get the time and really enjoy it. I have made some fab Xmas presents.
Reading maybe writing!!! Their could be a novel just waiting to get out.
It is very difficult when you are use to being outside but it will not be forever. Hope this helps.

Yes, write a book! We all have one in there somewhere…

Or, get a Wii and do virtual versions of all your usual hobbies

I love the idea of scrapping that sounds fun. I have been on twitter and facebook and play the applications like farmville where you build your own farm and it has been such fun with the neighbours. There are other apps that I do because of competition with my friends and met new ones also - top restaurant or Yoville where there is daily chat with friends. I also practice online typing skills and testing as I want to return to work.

I twitter to all over the world as well as celebs! Its just a case of keeping the brain active I suppose. I walk 5 miles a day and challenge myself on times except when walking around Westfield as I tend to stop quite a bit in there.

What about swimming - are you able to gain some stamina there?
Good luck and have fun choosing.x

Hi Faireyem,

I’m pretty active and have missed some of the stuff I usually do over the summer (body boarding and swimming in particular) but I am still cycling and walking. I went out on my bike 4 days after my first lumpectomy and 3 days after my re excision. The senior Reg told me to keep up my general exercise regime through chemo, so am walking and doing step.
My Consultant said as I was fit I would be fine but to not go far the first time! I’ve been told that I can do all through Chemo as well although it took 11 days before I felt up to anything over 8 miles. In between I’ve played scrabble - not had any weirdos yet, must be my picture putting them off! lol

Take care

Katie

Thanks everyone, some fab ideas. I’ve looked into some OU courses and am considering starting a course. Even though I teach Maths (up to GCSE) and I already have an A-Level in it, last year I decided to retake my A-Level Maths to get a better grade, only did my AS though and got an A, so considering teaching myself the rest of the A-Level course this year. Or I might do something totally different like a language, I always fancied learning Spanish.

Quite like the idea of making my own Christms cards too. This week I am going to try making my Wedding Thank You cards myself.

As for physical activities, doc told me I can’t do any watersports til treatment finishes. Haven’t been out on my bike for a bit so I think I’ll dust it off. Keeping off the mountainboard for a bit but I’ll stick on the skateboarding. Still don’t feel up to doing much this week though, hoping to be more active next week.

Thanks

hi - thought i’d add to this post. I was also very active post DX but have been told to stop mountainbiking and kickboxing - Physio said for at least a year after surgery…aaarrrggghhhh…i’m gonna lose my mind if this is the case! Already put on nearly a stone and have absolutely no muscle tone left. I ignored advise at first, went on 10 mile walk after 1st chemo and continued kickboxing but found i really didnt have the stamina and got really breathless and been having problems withpainful veins and a seroma so had to quit the kickboxing. I started tai-chi (apparantly it helps the white blood cells) and I’m looking at doing pilates if a can find a daytime class. Tried to join a yoga class but the teacher said i was too young - its for over 55s only!! i still take the bike out as often as possible but just keeping to short flat 3 mile jaunts. Missing my adrenalin kicks big style tho!
