I am newly diagnosed, awaiting surgery this week. I was told of my local Maggies centre and their breast cancer support group that meets monthly. I was not sure whether to go or not as I was worried that seeing others ahead of me in the journey would be scary.
Well, quite the opposite. I went along for the first time yesterday, and I was truly shocked at how much it helped to physically be around others in the same boat. Most of the last 3 months I have spent trawling the internet for all the different scenarios and outcomes…and oh how the mind wanders. In person, you are more focused on what is relevant for you, and I left feeling optimistic rather than bleak. So many long term survivors
So I just wanted to mention how in person support groups are a great compliment to this forum (which also helps keep Dr Google at bay!)
May I say you’ve taken a very positive step finding support from Maggies as well as this forum.
My daughter was diagnosed last year at 39 and the support she has had from her local Maggies has been amazing.Like you she was very wary whether it would be the right place for her at such a vulnerable time. She firstly joined the Look good feel better session and came away with the most beautiful huge goody bag especially suited to her skin whilst going through treatment. She also joined the Were Now session as she approached the end of her treatment and met some lovely ladies ,they are in constant touch. She is now seeing a psychologist for a few sessions as she thought she would benefit to help her move forward to the future.
It has certainly been her go to place throughout her breast cancer journey
I wish you all the best for your surgery this week.xx
