Surgeon couldnt find sentinel node or axillary nodes

I had a WLE at the end of 2021 with margins cleared in Jan 2022. I have since had an excision biopsy for local recurrence in September of this year.
I underwent a mastectomy with dye injected for a sentinel node biopsy but on the morning following the surgery , I was told that the surgeon had been unable to find the sentinel, nor indeed any nodes. I am concerned about this due to believing this to be an important part of staging and in further treatment requirements.
Thank you.

Hi Sparrowhawk

Thanks for posting.

It’s understandable you’re concerned that your surgeon was unable to find any lymph nodes following the injection of dye and a mastectomy.

Treatment for breast cancer recurrence depends on a number of factors, including the type of recurrence and the treatment you have had previously.

You don’t mention whether you had lymph nodes removed when you had a wide local excision at the end of 2021. The best people talk to about this are your surgeon and breast care nurse as they will have all the details of both your operations and can explain why any further treatment has or hasn’t been recommended.

Do call our helpline if you would like to talk this through or have any further questions. The helpline team have time to listen to your concerns, talk things through and signpost you to more support and information.
