I’m in a dilema about which surgery to have, having been told I need single mastectomy, my initial thoughts were for a tissue reconstruction but having spoken to the Plastic surgeon they say I’ll need a double Tug or possibly Lug reconstruction as I don’t have enough tissue on my tummy.
I’m a really active person loving my mountain biking, running and swimming and am now thinking maybe an implant would be simpler for me as really don’t want to be inactive after recovery from surgery.
I’d be really grateful if anyone that’s now active or was active before the same op could give me some advice on how they feel after having the surgery.
Equally anone that’s had a single implant - are you still able to be as active as you were beforehand?
I appreciate there will be some limitations and I’m not expecting to bounce straight back on a bike, but for me it’s my mental release and a really important part of my life, so very keen to know that I’m making the right decision.
Hi Rhiannan,
I’m not the right person to answer because I ended up with a lumpectomy and repair (tissue from my side to replace excision). I am small breasted and not a lot of extra tissue to work with so I was seriously considering a single mastectomy. I’m also very active and it was my biggest concern. I would have gone with an implant. One thing I was trying make sure of was placing the implant above muscle rather than underneath as I think it’s supposed to be easier to recover, less invasive, less limiting in the long run. If you go in that direction find the right person to do it and ask those questions.
Thanks for your reply, so having seen the plastic surgeon yesterday they’ve now advised me to have an implant as think they’d be struggling to get enough tissue from both thighs, so the decision has been taken away from me anyway.
I really did want a natural reconstruction but obviously it wasn’t meant to be.
Ive had a single mastectomy snd reconstruction with an implant on my left side. I opted against a diep because i didnt want to contend with a longer recovery time and a bigger op. Im 3 weeks out of my op, and whilst i dont know how things will be long term, my surgery went really well, it’s all healing well. Whilst at present i am a little lopsided i know my breast will change over the year and drop and fill out a little. Youre under BC help for 10 years so if after a few years you want a diep then thats always an option for you. Thats what helped me to make my decision.
After the op, I was up and about (out if bed) more or less the day after and Im able to go outside for short bursts 3 weeks out. If you have any more questions feel free to ask x
You’re welcome. Ive found these forums and the BCN website to be such a big help, every step of the way. Keep reaching out and asking questions/sharing your worries etc.
Take time to process every step, and dont take on too much at once, it definitely helps to break up each step and decisions to be made. Youve got this!
Wishing you well for your future surgery, gice yourself grace and lots and lots of love! X
