Surgery for Secondary

Hi I was diagnosed with lobular bc in Dec 24 and was told I’d need mastectomy due to size. I was trying to get my head round options for possible reconstruction when a CT scan revealed spread to one spinal lesion. Obviously I was shocked and was told I would now be referred to oncologist for systemic treatment to get the disease under control and then the option of surgery to the breast may be revisited. I’m happy to say I’ve had a good response to this treatment and breast tumour has been shrinking while spine metastasis has remained stable. We asked about the surgery and the onco said they’d raise it at next mdt meeting. They have now said they’d can recommend a palliative mastectomy if I would like but won’t increase survival but may help local control. I wondered if anyone else has had this option?

I had the option but they recommended to not have the surgery until I get growth. To have surgery would mean I’d have to come off my treatment which could lead to growth. I’ve been stable since June 2020. I don’t have lobular though.

I have secondary breast cancer too. The primary is in my left breast and the secondary is in my tailbone. I have been having treatment for a year - letrozole and palbociclib tablets and monthly denosumab injection. My last PET scan showed that only cancer showing up in my body is the tumour in my breast, which unfortunately didn’t shrink this time, it’s still approx, 4 cm in size. The MDT feel I’m a good candidate for surgery, so I am having a mastectomy on 24th April. I’m still not sure that I have made the right decision, but am worried the lump might grow again, and spread. I will be off the palbociclib tablets for a month, but still taking the letrozole. I just wish there was more research about this, My oncology team say the same thing. Much love to all the lovely ladies on this forum xx

Hi Jansy I had my mastectomy on 16th March. Had to come off Palbo for a month but now back on it. I’ve had reconstruction with expander implant and am recovering well. Had a CTscan so waiting on results from that. Recommended to have radiotherapy to chest wall so have an appointment to discuss. Also being suggested is bone treatment Z Acid or Denosumab. Not sure what to go for. Good luck with your surgery
