Surgery May 2018

(Coming out as a lurker to say that I grew up with the pease pudding rhyme–in the US! We had it a bit garbled, though: all these years, I thought it was ‘peas porridge’. I too doubt many kids learn it today, in either form.)

Haha! Inlove that ‘peas porridge!’ Has made its way to the states! X

Jean I think I’m going to have to look up a recipe for please pudding and make some next time the girls are home, they need to experience pease pudding!
If someone told me last year that I would be on a cancer forum having a laugh and a chat about pease pudding I would have thought they were nuts! X

I used to sing the rhyme too (down South) and my daughter learnt to play it on her flute a couple of years ago so its still going strong.  I like the sound of it… making my mouth water… (doesn’t take much these days though) and I also love mushy peas… unfortuntely rest of the family don’t.   I also fancy apple pie too.  oh Feenix you’ve lead me off the straight and narrow again (well to be fair the new box of biscuits I was bought has done that already).

I have to agree that I never thought I would be discussing Pease Pudding on a Cancer Forum… :smileyvery-happy:

I’m still hanging on to the dreaded drain, and still have a slightly numb thumb, althought must say it is improving.   The numb armpit is taking its place now!  Doing the exercises regularly as get very stiff otherwise… I’d forgot all about that feeling.  Oh well must keep doing them in order to have rads!

My cough hasn’t got any better and I have felt a whole lot worse, so tired. So went to GP this morning and got anti b’s. Hoping that they make a difference, I feel so wiped out, sleeping all of the time. Fingers crossed.
I’m halfway through rads now (10 sessions) and my skin is turning pink. It’s not sore yet but there are some tender points particularly under my arm feels a bit like someone is poking a pen into it.
How long did you have the drain after your last op Kip? Was it a similar time or much shorter? Do you massage your arm in and after the shower? I was told gentle massage working up the arm helps the lympahatic system. I don’t know if it will help you get rid of your drain but worth a try? X

Michelle, I wasn’t told to massage but I have been, although can’t have a shower or proper bath without soaking the drain… the tube is so short this time that I can’t even put it on the ground outside the shower cubicle.   I only had the drain for 4 days last time, at the moment this one is still draining twice as much as they would like, will have to see what they say at hospital tomorrow.

Feenix - apple pie… mmmmm…

I’ve been trying clothes today for an evening out later and can’t find anything that either does up and/or covers the drain.   So feeling very depressed with how I look, fat, skinhead with no eye lashes and a numb armpit!! I know thats very self indulgant and I know in the scheme of things it shouldn’t matter but I just don’t feel like me!   I must take myself in hand but its so difficult to exercise at the moment and now its getting cold and dark I need to eat…   I braved the scales early… didn’t make pretty reading!  As my teachers used to say “must try harder”…

Thanks Feenix, I pinched a gold hand bag from my daughter (teenagers do come in useful some times) and it was perfect, went across my boy and nobody could tell.  Actually did me good to go out and do something “normal”.   As my friends all said, “get well first and then address the weight issue”… so I will try to eat a bit healthier and avoid the biscuit tin for a while and then deal with weight/fitness when I can.

Hope you enjoyed your salad, I had salad with my tea too, and avoided pudding!  No tipples either, just a bottle of water at the theatre.

Oh Kip I know just how you feel, chemo takes away so much of us. The good news is you are on the up, focus on recovering from the op and bit by bit you will start to look and feel more like you again. If it’s self indulgent then I’m the leader of that gang! I obsess about each mm of hair growth. Even not having body hair left me feeling odd. It might be a trend to have it all off down there but it’s not the look for me! Think about getting back to ‘normal’ for Christmas. 7 more weeks away from the op and chemo and you feel so much better. I hope you managed to enjoy yourself with your friends last night, I’m impressed at you going for a night out!
I think the negatives of our biscuit/chocolate eating are starting to out weigh the positive’s! I am going to make an effort to cut the rubbish out as I’m not sure now is the time to ‘diet’ as such but perhaps make more of an effort with healthy food. Having said that I spent all day in bed yesterday and looks like today will be similar, I can’t stop sleeping! At least sleeping isn’t eating! I’m not sure I could do salads Jean, comfort mash and stews are calling me. If only we had some food in the house to cook with!!
Have a good day all xx

CDC I meant to say I read you post about BDM and am full of admiration for you, well done for taking action keep us informed xx

I think our posts crossed Kip! Glad you had a good night x

Yes Jean rads and this cough have wiped me out. Unlike me I’m being sensible and resting but it’s no fun. I can see where your friend is coming from not realising until looking back the toll it had taken. I feel a bit like that about chemo, that I marched through it all just trying to get to the end and then when I finished I realised I had/have all these side effects and maybe it had affected me more than I thought at the time. I think my tiredness now is an accumulation of everything and yes I am still on herceptin too. Hopefully my energy will start coming back soon.
Good to hear you are getting back to hooping, you must report your progress here as it always makes me smile. xx

Ooooh Feenix you do it to me every time… mince with dumplings…salivating now… :smileytongue:  I love a dumpling…

Michelle - I check every mm of hair growth too, keep asking the kids “is it grown more today”… very impatient to be able to comb something!   And I hate the bald down there look too… whats that all about.?  Perhaps I;m just to old for all that malarkey… must say its starting to sprout there too… looking like I’ve hit puberty again… well thats the only bit of me thats looking that age…

Yessss!   Finally, been to hospital, had dressing off and wound healing well and they have taken out the drain.  Nurse checked with the surgeon and he said as it had been 9 days it had to go.   Unforutnately she did say it may leak or become swollen and may need draining… eek… got to keep and eye on it, but very nice not to have the flowery bag with me!  Now just got to wait a week for those results.

Good news Kip, progress x

Hi all I saw want to reply properly but I had 5 hospital appointments over the last 3 days and feeling totally wiped out. Chemo went ahead albeit slowly - I’m going to stay on 80% Paclitaxel and they have to administer it slowly over 3 hours. I had a ‘funny turn’ - light headed and face flushed and they stopped it and gave me a different anti allergy drug for 15 mins before resuming. Not sure what’s going on but I have had no sleep whatsoever tonight and Inean literally.

Good to read your posts and I’ll answer properly later today hopefully. I’ve decamped to my Mums to the weekend- alone! Half-term holiday nearly finished off! Xxx

Cdc poor you, no sleep!  Thats so tough.  Look forward to hearing from you when you feel up to it.

Well so far no leaks or swelling, so nice to be back laying on  my side.  Just trying to do the exercises and get this arm moving.

Feenix the woodburner is lovely but got too hot last night!

hi cdc must have been emotional seeing your dads car go,.  Youve always got those memories though.  Sounds like your sister is doingnthe right thing getting a private ultrasound but she shouldn’t have to.  It really is a lottery as to what each hospital can/does offer isnt it!  Hop3 uiu had some decent sleep last night.

Ive just sent my hubby off to butchers for sausages and burgers for bonfire dinner and he came back without the burgers…

Hi all,

OH managed to get the burgers in the end!  What a wally!

How are you all doing?  I am fed up of the stiff, numb armpit business.   Am keeping on with the exercises but it just feels so weird, the ball under the arm pit feeling is strange and annoying.   The scar itself is healing so quickly, but the hole from the drain is leaking still, not too much but enough to come through a dressing after a day or so.  The nurses are going to have another check on Thursday when I go for my results.   Had my first proper lay down in the bath last night which was lovely, still got sticky residue from the dressings which is proving hard to shift… especially when I can’t feel if I am touching my armpit!   Started driving on Saturday too which was good and not painful, nice to be mobile again.

Well sun is shining and I’m working, although have walked the dog this morning (in an attempt to shift at least one of the many chocolotes I ate at the weekend!).

Have good day

Hi Kip
Baby oil is good for removing dressing residue.

Ladies have any of you had a seroma?  I have developed a hard swelling under my armpit, its not exactly painful just uncomfortable to put my arm down, feels like an orange under my arm.  Its definately bigger than yesterday?  I am going to phone the BC in the morning to check but just wondered if anyone had experience of this?  So annoying i i feel like im gojng backwards.  My drain .wound is still slighkty leaking so perhaps the fluid is filling up inside?  Just something else to worry about.
