Surgery next month

Hi

I’ve had my last chemo ( hopefully) and surgery is next month. Feeling really tearful, anxious, not knowing what to expect. I’m having right side mastectomy, sentinel node biopsy.
I think I got through the chemo okay, this just feels so different. Any advice would be much appreciated xxxxx

Hi, I had IV chemo last year followed by a mastectomy. I went into the hospital at 7.30, was shown to my room and answered various questions (many asked several more times!), given gown and socks etc. I saw the surgeon who marked me up and the anesthetist who explained slowly and clearly what would be happening. Everyone was very respectful and keen to make me feel reassured as I was terrified. I felt perfectly happy as I went to the prep room and the chap talked to me in a brilliant way and the next thing I knew, I was in recovery and it was only 10 o’clock. I was sick a few times but it was no problem. I was given paracetamol till the following morning when I said there was no pain and I didn’t need them and I didn’t take any more at all! The drain was okay too, I thought it would be really difficult but it was easy to manage. The dressing was big but comfortable, and you could shower in it. I had it taken off after a fortnight by my clinic nurse. I can honestly say that the surgery has been the easiest bit in this whole journey. I’m older and not worried losing my boob. I think you must ask about anything you’re not sure of or is worrying you. Hope this is helpful and, though we all have different experiences, I hope you feel a little reassured. All the very best. Xx
