Surgery options AFTER radiotherapy

Hi everyone,

Long story short. I have recently found out I have the PALB2 mutation and as such will be having a double mastectomy.

I had breast cancer almost 4 years ago. Triple positive, grade 3, stage 2. I had a wide local excision with therapeutic mamoplasty, 6 rounds of chemotherapy, 25 rounds of radiotherapy plus boost, Herceptin and I take Letrozole.

I’ve been told by my surgeon that I could have a double mastectomy with implant reconstruction. Straight forward I was told. A second surgeon said reconstruction with implants is not possible due to previous radiotherapy (there could be healing issues with the radiated breast) and I will need a flap or latissimus dorsi reconstruction. He referred me to the plastic surgeons.

He said I don’t have enough flesh on my stomach so my flap reconstruction would be from my buttocks or I could go with latissimus dorsi (muscle from my back). I am waiting for my plastics referral but in the meantime time wanted to asK if anyone has had implant reconstruction after radiotherapy and if it was successful?

Thanks everyone
