Swimming after radiotherapy

Hi everyone
I’ve just finished rads and realise I forgot to ask the nurses about how soon I could go swimming.
My best friend has just booked us in to Ragdale Health Spa (2nd Oct) - its our yearly treat to ourselves. But now I wonder if I’ll be able to go swimming.

Any advice - much appreciated

Hope everyone currently having rads is doing well

I was told you could swim once the skin reactions had settled down - so about 4-6 weeks, depending if you peel or have broken skin or not. My guess is that you will probably be OK but you might want to give your BCN or rads dept a quick ring. Have to confess I still have not been swimming depsite intending to…

Hi Revcat
thanks for replying. My rads were all on my neck, so I might just settle with paddling!

Hope you’re doing well

Hi Linda

I was given the OK to resume swimming by my Onc at 4 week check following Rads in March this year.

It depends on skin condition; in fact my boob had quite a few spots (but not sore) a very peely nipple (was sore) but Onc said to go swimming as it would help soften the crusty bits and it would come away!

Didn’t fancy it floating past me in the pool so “soaked it off” in the shower at home. I had Diprobase cream prescribed for peely bit and was told to make sure I showered well after swim & slap cream on to moisturise. If it tingled when I got in to get back out again.

I had no issues; but still “slap it on” after I shower.

Why don’t you give your BCN a call? She will probably know. I also had a number to call the radiography nurses after treatment if any probs before I had my 4 week check, so they may be able to help if you can get in contact?

Take care
Lynne

Thanks Lynne
I’ll wait nearer the time to see if I’m red or sore (so far just a little bit pink) and as you suggested give the hospital a ring.
I don’t have a BCN (bit of a funny situation - don’t ask), but listening to you I think it will be a common sense approach.

Hope you’re doing well
