swimming

I’m off for a weekend at a Haven site (my cheapy Sun newspaper holiday) in two weeks. I had mastectomy and node clearance 10 days ago. Do you think I’ll be okay to swim? Dont get my chicken fillet until mid October so will have to go commando. Not that bothered about it really. But will this be okay on scar etc. Probably start chemo week after this if I get to choose, will know more this Thursday.
Anyone had any experiences? My children will miss me in the pool if I’m not there.
love
Vanessa

Hi Vanessa,

10 days ago isnt a long time for healing, can you ask your BC nurse?
I would be surprised if they said yes but hope the sake of your hols they say yes.

oh and i wont go swimming because im wearing a wig and to vain to take it off!!!

All my friends of the same age are Nicola’s and Joanne’s… They added to the list then!

Tracey you are further down the road than me! I’m a Vanessa after the sexy Vanessa Redgrave… If only eh

they sound more sophisticated then my name!!!

Is your wig very important to you? Tried anything else? We the only ones around tonight then. Hubby watching rugby so very very bored… This bets it anyday… ha

unless its rugby leage!! im exactly half watching peter kay.
think everyone is tired out, im working tomorrow so i’ll be going bed at ten, so you’ll have the whole site to yourself ha ha.

Yes the wig is very important as from an early age i wouldnt leave the house without my hair being nice and i was only eight!!! Ive had lovely blonde hair but now its growing back brown, im gutted as the rest of my body hair is blonde, doesnt make sense does it. Ive got a couple of inches but not confident enough to put wax on it and go but i am getting sick of the wig now, especially in these bl**dy winds!!! keep thinking its going to blow off across the playground when i drop my little boy off!!!

You have a good day at work tomorrow. Bedtime for you Tracey it’s 10pm. I have short cropped hair and dont spend much time on it anyway. See how I feel when it all falls out.
See ya later

Vanessa

Hi, I had a mastectomy and was back swimming a mile a day two weeks later with no problems whatsoever. I bought a mastectomy costume and a swimming form from Amoena and have swam every day for the past 9 months whilst waiting for my reconstruction ops to start in October. When my hair fell out I bought a swimming hat - I was just careful on my ‘low’ days during chemo not to swallow too much of the pool! My oncologist and consultant were all for me to carry on as normal so I did.
Hope this helps and enjoy your break.
Clarabelle.

Thanks Vanessa, really love going to work, not!!!

Clarabelle sounds like a light in your tunnel, its looking good for the swimming. Can i come?

Good on you Clarabelle. I cant imagine swimming 64 lengths at the moment. But you have inspired me to go swimming once I’m driving again. Just going to go with one boob as I can’t afford to pay for a false one. Getting my NHS one mid October. At least my cozzy will fit (was getting a little tight)!!

Vanessa

Hi all

I swam two weeks after mastectomy and bought a cheap(£12 I think) foam swimming boob from Nicola Jane - excellent!!! (they have a web site). Swimming is great and like Clarabelle I swam lots after op and also now after reconstruction.

have a great holiday

Hi everyone, I had mastectomy last year and had expander removed and replaced with implant 3 weeks ago. I can’t wait to go swimming again, but last time, after the mastectomy, I was told I must wait until the scar was fully healed as there was a risk of infection getting in. I don’t want to have to have it taken out again, so I am being patient. I did go to a pool with a friend with young children, but I sat on the side and dangled my legs in and looked after the tiny one.
Have a great holiday anyway
