Swollen collarbone;red and hit

I have posted recently about my breast clinic referral. All seemed ok but now, over the past 2 weeks, I have developed pain in my collarbone. This weekend it is swollen and pink. I also have a small burning area beneath it and my chest is also pinker. Husband has confirmed it is definitely swollen (I suffer with anxiety) and warm to touch. I cannot find anything positive about swollen collarbones and it seems too much of a coincidence that it’s on the side that was investigated. Biopsy I had last month was on the breast whereas this is more the upper chest and near collarbone.

Hi Mishmash,

Sorry you are so distressed- you said you had a biopsy last month. Do you have your results yet?

If so - what were they? If not you really ought to chase them up - usually they are back within 2 weeks.

It may be  a reaction to the biopsy, which has been taken. However, I would certainly recomment that you see your GP tomorrow morning to have it checked out, as an infection may have set in, which needs treating.

Let me know how you get on. I recently supported a lady with anxiety, so I understand how challenging this is for you. I am here to support you and point you in the right direction, when it is of help to you.

So I had results of biopsy last month and they were fine but the rash is on the chest not the breast so not at the sight of the biopsy. Breast clinic have fit me in on Tyesday. Am in so much pain along chest and collarbone am not sure how I will sleep. Not sure it’s possible for good news with a swollen collarbone??

Well that was a waste of time. She thinks it’s nerve pain and has referred me to the pain management team; she didn’t even make notes of what I was saying and said that she couldn’t see a definite rash; just redness to the skin. Also told me to apply diclofenac gel to all painful areas??? Thanks for all your advice; I shall have to learn to live with the pain and hope that I never need to be referred again.

Hi Mishmash,

I’ve only just seen this thread. There is a small chance that it could be an infection called cellulitis.  It causes heat, pain and redness in the affected area and can become serious. It could have been caused by the biopsy. If you are still in pain it might be worth going to your GP and asking if they think it is a possibility. It is treated with antibiotics xx

Thanks all for your helpful comments. Was phoned up by GP last week and asked to pop in so they could check the bruising. I still have a shaded area 7 weeks later and at the weekend my breast felt like I had glass in it and still tender to touch it. She still insists its severe hormonal pain and gave me amitryptline to help with pain and anxiety. Hubbie would like second private opinion now as he said biopsy is only accurate if taken from the right area and as IBC is the skin surely breast tissue wouldn’t show anything up.
