Swollen hand

I have lymphoedema in my left arm following sentinel lymph node removal. I wear a compression sleeve and glove in the daytime but overnight my hand swells. It’s so bad I can hardly move it. What should I do?

Hello longmuir1949

Thank you for your question.

Lymphoedema is swelling caused by a build-up of lymph fluid in the surface tissues of the body. You mention you wear the sleeve and glove during the day but that your hand swells overnight.

Managing lymphoedema will sometimes involve adjusting treatments and techniques. You may want to speak with your lymphoedema specialist how best to manage your symptoms. The compression garment is most useful when your muscles are working actively. It is least useful during rest. However, your lymphoedema specialist will tell you if it’s suitable to wear it at night if you find it comfortable to do so to reduce the swelling.
