Tamoxifen and dizziness

I was diagnosed with primary breast cancer (triple positive) August 2023. I’ve had a mastectomy, 6 rounds of chemo and 18 lots of Herceptin and have been taking Tamoxifen since March 2024.

Up until recently I’ve been having minimal side effects. Hot flushes, minor joints aches.

About 4 weeks ago I started getting dizzy spells. Feeling almost like Vertigo, some days are worse than others.

I’ve told my oncologist who sent me for a CT scan and I am awaiting the results because inevitably I think the cancer has returned to my brain. He said he’s not too worried as I’m not having sickness or bad headaches.

But in the meantime whilst waiting for my results the anxiety is really effecting me (which I know could make the dizziness worst).

I just wondered if dizziness was a symptom of tamoxifen and why is it happening after 10 months. It has coincided with me finishing my Herceptin on 31st December.

My periods have returned but oncologist said my bloods were fine and no sign of iron or vitamin deficiency.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I did get dizziness on tamoxifen, but from the start of taking it really. One of many reasons I stopped. Could be worth asking your oncologist if you could take a tamoxifen break for 4 weeks, that way you’ll find out if its that or not.

Hi cc2112

Thank you for posting.

This sounds like a really difficult time for you and it’s understandable you would like to know if dizziness is a side effect of tamoxifen. As you can see from the electronic medicines compendium light-headedness is a common side effect of tamoxifen.

It’s good to hear you have seen the oncologist and that your bloods are fine. Waiting for scan results can often be a very stressful and anxious time. You may find this information about scan anxiety and coping emotionally with breast cancer helpful. You can also talk to your breast care nurse about how you are feeling.

As @entropy mentions sometimes you can discuss with your oncologist whether taking a break from tamoxifen would stop the dizziness. Some women also find they tolerate another brand of tamoxifen better.
