Tamoxifen and general anaesthetic

Hi! I am scheduled to have a little procedure done under G.A. My consultant has advised that I do not need to stop taking Tamoxifen for this procedure. Does this seem right?
Many thanks,
Lynne

I would check with the team who are doing the procedure / pre- assessment team about this . Xx

Hi Lynne

Thanks for posting.

Some women will be recommended to stop tamoxifen temporarily around the time of an operation. This is because of the risk of a blood clot with reduced mobility after surgery. This may depend on the length of the surgery. You mention you are having a small procedure so it might be that your surgeon feels stopping tamoxifen is not necessary as your mobility will not be affected (apart from the procedure itself).

We’re not sure if the surgeon is part of your breast team or in a different speciality. You could speak to them again about this and discuss any concerns you have with your breast care nurse just so you feel fully reassured.

Do call our helpline if you would like to talk this through or have any further questions. The helpline team have time to listen, talk things through and signpost you to more support and information if necessary. Your call will be confidential, and the number is free from UK landlines and all mobile networks. The number is 0808 800 6000. If you have hearing or speech difficulties prefix our number with 18001 and the call will go through Relay UK. Our helpline has access to telephone interpreters if language translation is required.

If you would prefer one of our nurses to call you. To do this, please complete this form ticking the box agreeing to a call back .

Our usual opening hours are Monday to Friday 9am - 4pm and 9am -1pm on Saturday.

Out of hours you can leave a message and we will call you back when we next open.

Best wishes
